Position: Lab Technician
Department: Laboratory & Diagnostics
Location: Medscape Clinic
Reporting To: Laboratory In-charge / Centre Manager
Employment Type: Full-Time
Experience: 0–3 Years
Qualification: DMLT / B.Sc. MLT or equivalent recognized qualification
1. JOB PURPOSE
The Lab Technician is responsible for the accurate, timely, and safe collection, processing, testing, and reporting of patient samples in accordance with established laboratory protocols, quality standards, infection-control practices, and applicable regulatory requirements. The role requires maintaining high standards of accuracy, patient safety, confidentiality, documentation, and customer service.
1. KEY RESPONSIBILITIESA. Sample Collection & Patient Handling
- Perform blood, urine, swab and other routine specimen collections as per laboratory protocols.
- Verify patient identity and ensure correct sample labeling.
- Explain sample collection procedures to patients professionally.
- Ensure proper handling, storage and transportation of specimens.
- Provide home sample collection services when assigned.
- Maintain patient privacy, dignity and confidentiality during sample collection.
B. Laboratory Testing
- Perform routine laboratory investigations as per assigned competency.
- Handle hematology, biochemistry, clinical pathology and other laboratory investigations as applicable.
- Operate laboratory analyzers and equipment safely and efficiently.
- Perform manual testing procedures wherever required.
- Prepare reagents, controls and consumables according to SOPs.
- Identify abnormal, inconsistent or doubtful results and escalate them to the Laboratory In-charge / authorized medical personnel.
C. Quality Control
- Follow approved laboratory SOPs and quality-control procedures.
- Perform internal quality checks and maintain appropriate records.
- Ensure accuracy and reliability of test results.
- Participate in calibration, maintenance and validation of laboratory equipment.
- Report equipment malfunction, reagent issues or quality deviations immediately.
- Participate in internal audits and quality-improvement activities.
D. Documentation & Reporting
- Maintain accurate records of sample collection, processing and testing.
- Ensure timely entry of laboratory results into the Laboratory Information System / Hospital Information System.
- Maintain registers, worksheets, QC records and equipment logs.
- Ensure proper documentation of rejected, repeat or referred samples.
- Maintain confidentiality of patient information and laboratory reports.
E. Equipment & Inventory Management
- Operate laboratory equipment according to manufacturer instructions and SOPs.
- Perform routine cleaning and preventive maintenance as assigned.
- Monitor availability and expiry dates of reagents, kits and consumables.
- Inform the Laboratory In-charge regarding stock requirements.
- Minimize wastage and ensure appropriate utilization of laboratory consumables.
F. Infection Control & Safety
- Strictly follow infection-control and biomedical-waste-management protocols.
- Use appropriate PPE during sample collection and laboratory procedures.
- Follow safe practices for handling blood, body fluids, sharps and potentially infectious materials.
- Dispose of biomedical waste and sharps according to applicable procedures.
- Immediately report needle-stick injuries, exposure incidents, spills and other safety incidents.
1. PATIENT SERVICE RESPONSIBILITIES
- Maintain a courteous and professional approach with patients and attendants.
- Handle patient queries related to sample collection and basic laboratory procedures.
- Coordinate with doctors, nurses, reception and pharmacy teams whenever required.
- Ensure minimum waiting time for sample collection and processing.
- Escalate patient complaints or service issues to the appropriate supervisor.

- Accuracy of laboratory test results.
- Sample rejection/error rate.
- Timeliness of sample processing and reporting.
- Compliance with laboratory SOPs.
- Quality-control compliance.
- Equipment and reagent handling.
- Patient satisfaction and service quality.
- Documentation accuracy.
- Compliance with infection-control and safety standards.
- Productivity and turnaround time (TAT).
1. REQUIRED SKILLS & COMPETENCIES
- Valuable knowledge of laboratory procedures and sample handling.
- Good phlebotomy and specimen-collection skills.
- Basic knowledge of laboratory analyzers and equipment.
- Strong attention to detail and accuracy.
- Good documentation skills.
- Knowledge of infection control and biomedical waste management.
- Ability to work independently as well as within a healthcare team.
- Good communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to work under pressure and handle multiple samples efficiently.
- Basic computer knowledge and familiarity with LIS/HIS will be an advantage.
1. EDUCATIONAL QUALIFICATION
Mandatory:
- DMLT / Diploma in Medical Laboratory Technology, or
- B.Sc. MLT / B.Sc. Medical Laboratory Technology, or equivalent recognized qualification.
Preferred:
- 1–3 years of experience in a hospital, clinic or diagnostic laboratory.
- Experience with automated laboratory analyzers and LIS/HIS systems.
1. WORKING CONDITIONS
- Full-time position.
- Willingness to work in shifts, including night shifts, weekends and holidays as per clinic requirements.
- May be required to perform home sample collection.
- Must comply with all organizational policies, laboratory SOPs and infection-control requirements.
1. GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES
- Maintain professional conduct at all times.
- Protect patient confidentiality and organizational information.
- Follow the organization's Code of Conduct and HR policies.
- Participate in training, competency assessments and continuing education.
- Report incidents, near misses and safety concerns promptly.
- Perform any other laboratory-related duties assigned by the reporting manager within the scope of the role.
Pay: ₹12,000.00 - ₹18,000.00 per month
