About PortlPortl is a Connected Health, Fitness & Wellness Technology Company that designs and builds connected fitness products that combine intelligent hardware with adaptive coaching and performance insights to drive personalization at-scale. We are building the world’s most advanced human performance platform, where physiology meets technology to unlock the next frontier of human potential.
The RoleThis is a Program Design role for a Certified Personal Trainer or Strength and Conditioning Coach who wants to build training systems that reach the masses instead of delivering limited sessions on a gym floor.
Portl builds electromagnetic (EM) resistance devices. A motor controls the cables, so resistance can stay level through a rep, build as the user moves, hold them to a set speed, or go heavier on the eccentric portion of the movement. Each is a different stimulus. Your job is to apply training principles to this medium - matching resistance profile, load, and volume to what the user actually wants: strength, muscle, fat loss, or hybrid.
Most of connected fitness has solved for content volume. We are solving for whether people actually get stronger. You will own both halves of that: the programs themselves, and the hands-on validation that they work on the device. Reporting to the Head of Performance Science, you’ll:
- Design and write the workout library - individual sessions and multi-week structured programs - applying periodisation, progressive overload, and defined movement competency standards.
- Match goal to stimulus: decide which resistance profile, load, rep range, and rest structure actually serve strength, hypertrophy, fat loss, or endurance on this equipment - and know when the plain, level setting is the better answer.
- Program within real hardware constraints - cable angles, attachment configurations, range-of-motion limits, and the device load ceiling.
- Test every workout on the device before it ships. You will physically run the sessions, verify that load, tempo, and transitions behave as intended, and document what doesn’t.
- Tag and quality-check every program for experience level, movement pattern, equipment configuration, and intended training stimulus.
- Validate new programming approaches with test cohorts, then review completion and outcome data to inform the next cycle.
- Build fitness assessments and progress benchmarks that members can see themselves moving through.
- Write the in-product coaching cues and exercise descriptions - clear enough for a first-timer, precise enough for a lifter.
- Work directly with hardware, product, and engineering teams - feeding back where the device’s behaviour and the training intent diverge, and helping shape what the next generation should do.
This is a high-output, high-ownership role for someone who thinks in systems and writes with precision. What We’re Looking For
- Formal certification in fitness, personal training, or strength & conditioning (mandatory).
- Accepted Certifications: REPS India, SAI/NIS, INFS, NSCA, ACSM, NASM, ISSN, USAW/BWL
- Strong plus: FMS/SFMA, EXOS XPS, FRC/FRA.
- Also required: Current CPR/AED.
- 2+ years designing training programs for real clients - personal training, strength and conditioning, group coaching, or your own practice.
- Demonstrable command of periodisation, progressive overload, exercise selection, and regression/progression across mixed populations.
- Hands-on rigour. A meaningful part of this job is methodically testing sessions on the device and reporting precisely what went wrong. If repetition and protocol bore you, this isn’t the role.
- Working familiarity with cable-based and machine-based resistance training - you understand how line of pull, attachment height, and resistance profile change an exercise.
- Written English precise enough to describe a hip hinge to someone who has never done one.
- Comfort with spreadsheets and structured data - a large part of this role is a well-organised library.
- Evidence over trends. If you can explain why you don’t program something, that’s as interesting to us as what you do.
- Willingness to relocate to Hyderabad and work full-time in office. We are hiring from across India.
- What This Role Is Not
- It is not on-camera. We hire separately for that.
- It is not a gym floor role.
Why Join UsAt Portl, you’re not just an “employee”, you’ll be part of the core brain trust shaping the future of human performance technology. You’ll get:
- Ownership of the training programs that define the product experience.
- Daily hands-on access to electromagnetic resistance hardware - and real influence over how the next version behaves.
- A front-row seat to cutting-edge R&D; at the intersection of hardware, software, and exercise science.
- Opportunities to grow into product, curriculum, and leadership roles.
- The chance to impact thousands of lives with science-driven innovation.
To apply: send your CV along with one 4-week training program you’ve written for a real client, plus a short note on why you made the choices you made. We read the program before the CV.
