Engineering Manager - Software
Location: Pune / Bangalore
About Spiro Spiro is building the operating system for electric mobility across Africa - spanning battery swapping infrastructure, fleet operations, energy commerce, and CRM - live across nine markets (Nigeria, Kenya, Rwanda, Uganda, Tanzania, Morocco, Benin, Togo, and Cameroon). Backed by $200+M in funding, we're working on top-notch, cutting-edge technology to solve problems at genuine IoT, fintech, and mobility scale - real-time data pipelines, connected hardware, and platforms that run physical infrastructure, not just dashboards. We build systems designed to scale to billions of events a day and over 1 million transactions a day, and engineered for 99.999% uptime.
We're looking for exceptional engineers and leaders to join us in Pune or Bangalore to help build this platform. This isn't a "big company problems, big company headcount" environment - you'll own systems end-to-end, with a bar for technical rigor set by experience at top product tech companies, but a working style built for a company still being built.
The Role
We're looking for an Engineering Manager who has led high-performing teams at scale and wants to trade org-chart depth for real ownership. You'll run one or more core engineering teams - hiring, coaching, unblocking, and shipping - while staying close enough to the code to make sharp technical calls, owning your systems end-to-end.
What You'll Do
- Own delivery and quality for your team(s) end-to-end, balancing roadmap commitments against technical debt and platform reliability across our nine live markets.
- Hire and grow engineers; run structured interview loops, write leveling rubrics,
and build scorecards that raise the bar rather than just fill seats.
- Partner with Architecture and Product to translate ambiguous business needs (e.g., current market launches, new hardware integrations) into scoped, sequenced engineering plans.
- Drive engineering excellence: CI/CD health, DORA metrics, incident response quality, and on-call sustainability across systems built to scale to billions of events a day and over 1 million transactions a day, engineered for 99.999% uptime.
- Represent your team in OKR planning and hold it accountable to measurable outcomes (swap uptime, pipeline latency, deployment frequency, defect escape rate).
- Be hands-on when it matters - reviewing designs, unblocking incidents, and occasionally writing code - without becoming a bottleneck.
What You Bring
- 8+ years in software engineering, including 3+ years directly managing engineers, ideally at a top product tech company followed by high-growth startup experience.
- Track record of shipping distributed, data-intensive, or IoT-adjacent systems in production at meaningful scale.
- Strong fundamentals in event-driven architectures, distributed systems, and cloud infrastructure.
- Demonstrated ability to build and run structured hiring processes, not just conduct interviews.
- Comfort operating with incomplete information, thin support structures, and a "figure it out" mandate - this is a startup, not a division.
- Strong written communication; you can turn ambiguity into a clear plan colleagues can execute against.
Nice to Have
- Experience with emerging-market or multi-country infrastructure products.
- Exposure to IoT messaging platforms, OTA firmware delivery, or fleet/telematics systems.
- Experience managing globally distributed or hybrid teams.
