About the Role

We are looking for an experienced Staff Software Engineer to provide solid technical leadership while remaining hands-on in software development. The ideal candidate will have a strong backend engineering background, excellent expertise in Java, and experience driving architecture, API design, technical direction, and engineering best practices.

Key Responsibilities

- Set the technical direction for the teams sprint and continuously refine the product backlog.
- Own and provide technical authority across design and code reviews for the teams engineering surface.
- Break large initiatives and complex requirements into well-defined, estimable, and deliverable user stories.
- Own API contracts and ensure protocol/version compatibility across supported product releases.
- Establish and enforce a strong Definition of Ready, ensuring work begins with sufficient clarity to enable successful delivery.
- Mentor, coach, and onboard engineers while helping intermediate-level engineers grow technically.
- Collaborate closely with architects, product managers, and engineering leadership on product direction, architecture, and sequencing.
- Remain hands-on with development, spending approximately 50% of the time on coding and technical implementation.
- Drive engineering excellence through effective design reviews, code reviews, technical documentation, and development practices.
- Contribute to scalable, reliable, secure, and maintainable backend services.

Required Skills & Experience





- 1115 years of overall software engineering experience, preferably with significant experience in product-based organizations.
- Strong backend software engineering experience with Java.
- Working knowledge of TypeScript.
- Proven experience providing technical leadership and setting the technical direction for an engineering team.
- Strong experience designing REST APIs, service interfaces, and database schemas for services consumed by other teams or products.
- Demonstrated ability to decompose large and complex initiatives into smaller, actionable, and deliverable pieces of work.
- Experience making technical and compatibility decisions across multiple supported product versions.
- Strong experience conducting design and code reviews and establishing engineering standards.
- Proven ability to mentor engineers and support technical growth within a team.
- Hands-on experience with Spec-Driven Development (SDD) and AI-Assisted Development Lifecycle (AI-DLC) practices, or an equivalent modern software development methodology.
- Strong understanding of software development lifecycle, agile engineering practices, and production-quality software delivery.

Good to Have
- Experience with AWS and cloud-native application development.
- Experience with Docker, Kubernetes, or other containerized deployment technologies.
- Experience building distributed systems and scalable backend services.
- Exposure to CI/CD, observability, monitoring, and production engineering practices.
- Experience working in SaaS or enterprise product environments.
