1. Job Summary

The Senior Staff Nurse is responsible for providing safe, effective, and compassionate patient care while supervising and supporting junior nursing staff. The role involves clinical nursing responsibilities, patient monitoring, medication administration, documentation, infection prevention, coordination with doctors and other healthcare professionals, and ensuring compliance with hospital policies, nursing standards, and NABH requirements.
1. Key ResponsibilitiesA. Clinical Responsibilities

- Provide comprehensive nursing care to patients according to their individual needs and treatment plans.
- Assess patients and monitor vital signs, clinical condition, and response to treatment.
- Administer medications, injections, IV fluids, and other treatments as prescribed.
- Assist doctors during examinations, procedures, and emergency interventions.
- Identify changes in patient condition and immediately report them to the concerned doctor.
- Perform nursing procedures safely and efficiently.
- Ensure proper pre-operative and post-operative nursing care where applicable.
- Provide emergency care and participate in resuscitation procedures as required.
- Ensure safe transfer and handover of patients between departments.

B. Supervision & Team Coordination
- Supervise junior staff nurses, nursing assistants, and other support staff assigned to the unit.
- Allocate duties and ensure adequate staffing for smooth functioning of the department.
- Monitor the performance and compliance of nursing staff.
- Guide junior nurses in clinical procedures and patient care practices.
- Conduct effective shift handovers and ensure continuity of patient care.
- Escalate staffing, clinical, or operational issues to the Nurse In-Charge.

C. Patient Safety & Quality Care
- Ensure patient identification is carried out correctly before medications, procedures, investigations, and transfers.
- Follow medication safety practices and maintain accurate medication records.
- Implement fall prevention, pressure injury prevention, and other patient safety measures.
- Maintain patient privacy, dignity, and confidentiality.
- Educate patients and relatives regarding treatment, medication, diet, discharge instructions, and follow-up care as appropriate.
- Handle patient concerns professionally and escalate complaints when required.

D. Infection Prevention & Control




- Strictly follow hospital infection prevention and control policies.
- Maintain proper hand hygiene and use PPE appropriately.
- Follow standard precautions and transmission-based precautions.
- Ensure proper aseptic technique during nursing procedures.
- Maintain cleanliness and appropriate disinfection of patient-care areas and equipment.
- Follow biomedical waste segregation and disposal procedures.
- Participate in infection control audits and awareness programmes.

E. Documentation & Reporting
- Maintain accurate and timely nursing records and patient documentation.
- Record vital signs, medication administration, nursing interventions, and patient responses.
- Ensure proper documentation of incidents, adverse events, and clinical changes.
- Maintain nursing care plans and relevant checklists.
- Complete shift reports and handover documentation accurately.
- Ensure documentation complies with hospital policies and NABH standards.

F. Equipment & Inventory Management
- Ensure availability and proper functioning of essential nursing equipment.
- Check emergency equipment and supplies as per departmental protocol.
- Report damaged or malfunctioning equipment immediately.
- Monitor nursing consumables and inform the Nurse In-Charge regarding shortages.
- Ensure proper handling, cleaning, and storage of equipment.

G. Emergency & Critical Care Support
- Respond promptly to medical emergencies within the unit.
- Assist in Code Blue and resuscitation procedures.
- Maintain readiness of emergency equipment and crash carts.
- Provide appropriate immediate nursing interventions within the scope of practice.
- Coordinate with doctors and emergency/critical care teams during patient deterioration.

H. Training & Professional Development
- Participate in mandatory hospital training programmes.
- Support orientation and training of newly joined nursing staff.
- Participate in competency assessments and skill development programmes.
- Keep updated with current nursing practices, hospital protocols, and patient safety standards.
- Participate in continuing nursing education programmes.

I. NABH & Hospital Policy Compliance
- Follow hospital SOPs, policies,



protocols, and nursing standards.
- Maintain compliance with applicable NABH requirements.
- Participate in internal audits, quality improvement activities, and corrective actions.
- Ensure all required records and checklists are completed accurately.
- Promote a culture of patient safety, quality, and continuous improvement.

1. Qualifications

- B.Sc. Nursing / Post Basic B.Sc. Nursing / GNM from a recognized institution.
- Valid Kerala Nurses and Midwives Council (KNMC) registration.
- Additional relevant certifications will be an advantage.

1. Experience

- Minimum 3–5 years of relevant clinical nursing experience preferred.
- Previous experience in a supervisory or senior nursing role will be an advantage.
- Experience in a NABH-accredited hospital is preferred.

1. Working Conditions
