Job Describtion
1. Job Purpose
To provide effective clinical and administrative leadership in the Obstetrics, Gynaecology & Newborn Ward, ensuring safe, evidence-based, compassionate and patient-centred nursing care for mothers, gynaecology patients and newborns.
1. Key Responsibilities
A. Clinical Nursing Care Ensure safe and timely nursing care for obstetric, gynaecological and newborn patients.
Monitor maternal vital signs, pain, bleeding, uterine contractions and other relevant clinical parameters.
Ensure appropriate monitoring of postnatal mothers and patients following obstetric/gynaecological procedures.
Ensure essential newborn care, including temperature monitoring, feeding support, identification of danger signs and infection prevention.
Ensure proper assessment and escalation of abnormal findings to the treating doctor.
Supervise medication administration, IV therapy, blood transfusion and other clinical procedures as per hospital policy.
Ensure accurate nursing documentation, handover and maintenance of patient records.
Promote breastfeeding and provide appropriate support and education to mothers.
B. Ward Management
Allocate duties and responsibilities among nursing staff according to patient acuity and workload.
Ensure adequate staffing and appropriate skill mix during each shift.
Conduct effective shift handover and ensure continuity of care.
Monitor availability of emergency drugs, equipment, supplies and newborn care essentials.
Ensure crash cart and emergency equipment readiness as per checklist.
Coordinate with doctors, NICU/PICU, laboratory, pharmacy, OT and other departments as required.
Maintain smooth patient flow, admissions, transfers and discharges.
C. Infection Prevention & Patient Safety
Ensure compliance with hand hygiene and standard precautions.
Monitor infection prevention practices, biomedical waste segregation and environmental cleanliness.
Ensure aseptic technique during procedures and newborn care.
Identify and report hospital-acquired infections, medication errors, falls, near misses and other adverse events.
Participate in RCA, CAPA and quality-improvement activities when required.
Promote patient identification, medication safety and fall-prevention practices.
D. Staff Supervision & Development
Supervise staff performance and provide constructive feedback.
Identify training needs and coordinate nursing education and competency assessments.
Conduct/participate in ward-based training, drills and mock codes.
Ensure new staff receive appropriate orientation and competency validation.
Maintain professional discipline, teamwork and effective communication within the ward.
E. Quality & NABH Compliance
Ensure compliance with hospital policies, nursing protocols and applicable NABH standards.
Monitor nursing indicators, audits, checklists and quality records.
Ensure timely completion of nursing documentation and departmental records.
Participate in internal audits and quality-improvement initiatives.
Implement corrective and preventive actions for identified gaps.
F. Patient & Family Communication
Ensure respectful, compassionate and culturally sensitive care.
Educate mothers and families regarding newborn care, breastfeeding,
hygiene, medication and discharge instructions.
Address patient/family concerns appropriately and escalate unresolved issues to the Nursing In-charge.
Maintain confidentiality and protect patient privacy.
1. Emergency Responsibilities
Ensure immediate recognition and escalation of maternal and newborn emergencies. Coordinate emergency response during PPH, eclampsia, obstetric emergencies, neonatal deterioration and other critical situations.
Ensure availability and readiness of emergency equipment and medications.
Participate in BLS/ACLS/NRP or other emergency response activities according to competency and hospital policy.
1. Administrative Responsibilities
Prepare/coordinate duty rosters and staff allocation as assigned. Monitor attendance, leave and staff availability.
Maintain inventory and ensure timely indenting of required supplies.
Report equipment malfunction, shortages and maintenance requirements promptly.
Conduct regular ward rounds and identify operational gaps.
Submit required reports to the Nursing In-charge/Nursing Superintendent.
