EverPay Technologies is building a digital payments platform focused on making payments, transfers and everyday financial transactions more accessible across African markets.
We are looking for a Senior Backend Engineer / Technical Lead to take technical ownership of our backend platform and help bring an existing fintech product through testing, production readiness and continued development.
This is a hands-on engineering role. You will write production code while also helping establish architecture, code quality, security and engineering standards as the team grows.
Responsibilities
Own and develop EverPay’s backend architecture and APIs.
Review and improve an existing fintech codebase.
Build secure, scalable payment and transaction-processing services.
Develop and maintain REST APIs and third-party integrations.
Integrate payment gateways, banks, mobile-money providers and other financial APIs.
Design and maintain database architecture.
Implement authentication, authorization and secure transaction workflows.
Work with AWS cloud infrastructure and deployment pipelines.
Implement appropriate logging, monitoring and error handling.
Participate in code reviews and establish engineering standards.
Work closely with mobile and full-stack engineers.
Troubleshoot development, staging and production issues.
Help establish automated testing and CI/CD practices.
Follow secure software-development and secrets-management practices.
Document architecture, APIs and significant technical decisions.
Must Have
5+ years of professional software-engineering experience.
Strong backend engineering experience.
Strong experience designing and building production APIs.
Experience with relational databases such as PostgreSQL/MySQL.
Strong understanding of authentication, authorization and API security.
Production experience with AWS or comparable cloud infrastructure.
Git/GitHub and pull-request/code-review experience.
Experience designing scalable, highly available systems.
Strong understanding of application security and secure coding.
Ability to independently investigate and understand an existing codebase.
Strong written and spoken English.
Ability to work effectively in a remote environment.
Strongly Preferred
Previous fintech, banking or payments experience.
Payment gateway or payment-processor integration experience.
Experience with transaction ledgers or financial systems.
Mobile-money integration experience.
Experience with PCI DSS environments.
AWS IAM, Secrets Manager and CloudTrail experience.
Docker/container experience.
CI/CD and DevSecOps experience.
Experience mentoring or technically leading other engineers.

You should be comfortable taking ownership, challenging poor architectural decisions, documenting your reasoning and collaborating with other engineers through structured code review.
