Position: Sales Engineer — Screen Printing (Technical First)

Reports to: Manager – Sales & Service

Location: Mumbai (with regular domestic travel to customer sites)

Function: Machine expertise, maintenance, and print technique support for ATMA flatbed screen printing machines, with account development as a secondary responsibility

Role Summary

This role is being hired primarily for screen printing competence, not sales ability. The candidate is evaluated against three distinct categories of knowledge, and needs to show real strength in at least the first two. Sales exposure is welcome but will be developed on the job — it is not the reason this person is being hired.

Evaluation Framework — Three Categories

Every candidate should be assessed against these three categories separately. They are genuinely different skill sets, and a candidate can be strong in one and weak in another — don't let strength in one category compensate for a real gap in the others.

Category 1 — Flatbed Screen Printing Machine Knowledge

- Familiarity with flatbed screen printing machines — automatic and semi-automatic. ATMA experience is ideal, but hands-on experience with any other flatbed brand still counts, since the core machine logic transfers.
- Understands the machine's mechanical layout — squeegee and flood bar assembly, screen clamping, registration system, vacuum bed, indexing/pallet movement — not just how to operate the control panel.

Category 2 — Maintenance, Fixing & Mechanical/Engineering Troubleshooting (weighted most heavily)

- Can actually get inside a machine and fix it — mechanical, electrical, and PLC-level diagnosis, not just operate it or swap parts by guesswork.
- Diagnoses a breakdown from first principles and confirms the fix holds, rather than patching the symptom and moving on.
- Comfortable with electrical panels, inverter/servo drives, and basic PLC ladder logic (Mitsubishi, Siemens, Delta, or similar).

Category 3 — Screen Printing Technique & Process Knowledge

- Understands how to actually print,

not just how to keep the machine running — squeegee angle, pressure, and hardness; mesh count and tension; emulsion and exposure; ink viscosity and behaviour on different substrates.
- Can run a print trial and read the result — knows why a print has poor registration, pinholes, or uneven ink deposit, and what to adjust to fix it.
- This is the category most technically solid candidates are weakest in. Someone can be an excellent mechanical/electrical troubleshooter and still not know why a print is coming out wrong, because that is a process skill, not a machine-repair skill — and it is very often what the customer's complaint actually turns out to be underneath.

Key Responsibilities

- Install and commission ATMA flatbed machines at customer sites, including electrical, PLC, and mechanical setup and calibration, ahead of the customer's first production run.
- Diagnose and resolve breakdowns and technical complaints in the field — working through root cause rather than a quick patch — and confirm the fix holds before closing the ticket.
- Run print trials at the customer's site — squeegee, mesh, emulsion, and ink setup — to validate registration and print quality before and after commissioning or repair.
- Provide phone and WhatsApp technical support to customers, and coordinate spare parts sourcing or Taiwan/principal escalation where a local fix isn't possible.
- Document every service visit and resolution clearly enough that another engineer could pick up the same complaint later and see exactly what was tried and confirmed.
- Train customer operators on machine handling, print setup, routine maintenance, and basic troubleshooting so simple issues don't turn into service calls.

- Support new account development where the opportunity arises — understanding a prospect's process and recommending the right machine — but this sits behind the responsibilities above.
- Represent Sunstar at industry exhibitions and trade shows, primarily for live technical demonstrations.

Required Qualifications & Experience

- Diploma or Bachelor's degree in Mechanical, Electrical, Electronics, Mechatronics, Printing Technology, or Instrumentation engineering — mandatory.
- 2 to 6 years of hands-on experience with flatbed screen printing machines — auto or semi-auto — covering both machine maintenance and actual print production. ATMA experience is a strong plus but not mandatory.
- Demonstrated ability to diagnose and fix mechanical, electrical, and PLC-level faults independently, not just report them upward.
- Working knowledge of the screen printing process itself — mesh, emulsion, squeegee, ink — and the ability to run and read a print trial.
- Willingness to travel extensively within India, including to smaller industrial clusters, sometimes on short notice for a breakdown.
- Working proficiency in English and Hindi; additional regional languages (Tamil, Telugu, Gujarati) are an advantage given the spread of accounts.
- Sales experience is a plus, not a requirement.

Desired Skills & Attributes

- Genuinely enjoys taking a machine apart to find out what's actually wrong with it, rather than reaching for the easiest explanation.
- Comfortable working with limited documentation or spares and improvising a fix in the field.
- Disciplined about documentation and follow-up — treats a service ticket as open until it's actually confirmed resolved, not just visited.
- Even-tempered under pressure — breakdown calls often come from a frustrated customer, and how the engineer handles that first conversation matters.
- Basic comfort with CRM tools, Excel, and email correspondence for logging service history.

Pay: ₹50,000.00 - ₹60,000.00 per month
