The Resident Medical Officer (RMO) is responsible for providing continuous medical care to admitted patients and coordinating day-to-day clinical activities in the hospital.
Duties of RMO
- Patient Care
- Examine admitted patients and assess their clinical condition.
- Take detailed history and perform clinical examination.
- Monitor vital signs and clinical progress.
- Identify deterioration early and take appropriate action.
- Attend to emergency medical conditions promptly.
- Doctors' Orders & Treatment
- Implement and monitor treatment plans prescribed by consultants.
- Ensure medicines, investigations, and other treatments are carried out as advised.
- Review investigation reports and inform the concerned consultant of significant abnormalities.
- Ensure proper documentation of treatment and progress.
- Emergency Duties
- Attend immediately to all medical emergencies within the assigned area.
- Initiate appropriate emergency management and resuscitation when required.
- Call the consultant/specialist and arrange referral or transfer when necessary.
- Ensure proper handover during transfer of critically ill patients.
- Patient Monitoring
- Conduct regular rounds of admitted patients as per hospital policy.
- Monitor patients after procedures and surgeries.
- Maintain close observation of high-risk and critically ill patients.
- Record changes in the patient's condition in the medical record.
- Documentation
- Maintain accurate and timely clinical notes.
- Document diagnosis, treatment, progress, and significant events.
- Ensure proper completion of case sheets, progress notes, discharge summaries, and referral notes as applicable.
- Maintain confidentiality of patient information.
- Coordination
- Coordinate with consultants, nursing staff, laboratory, radiology, pharmacy, and other departments.
- Communicate important clinical information to the treating consultant.
- Participate in patient handover between shifts.
- Coordinate with the nursing team regarding implementation of medical orders.
- Admission, Transfer & Discharge
- Assess patients at the time of admission.
- Ensure initial medical assessment and necessary investigations are arranged.
- Coordinate patient transfers between departments/wards.
- Assist in discharge planning and ensure required documentation is completed.
- Patient & Attendant Communication
- Communicate appropriately with patients and their attendants regarding the patient's condition within the scope of the RMO's role.
- Explain routine investigations and treatment procedures when appropriate.
- Escalate difficult or sensitive clinical discussions to the consultant.
- Hospital Policies & Safety
- Follow hospital SOPs, infection-control practices, medication-safety procedures, and emergency protocols.
- Ensure patient identification and clinical safety protocols are followed.
- Report adverse events, medical errors, or unusual incidents immediately to the appropriate authority.
- Medico-Legal Responsibilities
- Ensure proper documentation of medico-legal cases.
- Inform hospital authorities and concerned departments as per hospital policy.
- Maintain accurate records in cases involving accidents, injuries, poisoning, or other medico-legal situations.
- Preserve confidentiality and follow applicable legal requirements.
- Shift & Handover
- Report for duty on time and remain available throughout the assigned shift.
- Give a proper handover to the incoming RMO.
- Highlight critical patients, pending investigations, urgent treatment, and other significant clinical issues.
- Additional Responsibilities
- Participate in clinical meetings, audits, training programs, and quality-improvement activities.
- Assist in maintaining discipline and smooth functioning of the clinical area.
- Perform other reasonable clinical duties assigned by the Medical Superintendent/Medical Director/authorized hospital management.
Key responsibility: The RMO must ensure that patients receive timely, safe, continuous medical attention and that any deterioration or emergency is promptly recognized and escalated to the appropriate consultant. Pay: ₹25,000.00 - ₹30,000.00 per month
