Key Responsibilities
- Architect and develop end-to-end Power BI solutions semantic data models, DAX measures, reports, and dashboards — for insurance domains including policy administration, claims, underwriting, premiums, reserving, and loss ratios.
- Design robust, scalable tabular data models (star schema) and author optimized, maintainable DAX for complex insurance KPIs such as loss ratio, combined ratio, earned vs. written premium, retention, and claims frequency/severity.
- Lead data preparation and transformation using Power Query (M), establishing reusable, well-documented ETL patterns and ensuring query folding where possible against source systems.
- Optimize report and model performance — tune the VertiPaq engine, reduce model size, refactor inefficient DAX, and diagnose bottlenecks using DAX Studio, Tabular Editor, and Performance Analyzer.
- Implement and govern enterprise BI standards: row-level security (RLS), workspace and deployment pipeline management, version control, naming conventions, and certified datasets.
- Collaborate with actuaries, underwriters, claims teams, and business stakeholders to translate regulatory and operational requirements into accurate, auditable analytics.
- Integrate Power BI with the broader data platform — data warehouses, Azure Synapse / SQL, Databricks, and Dataflows — and support DirectQuery, Import, and Composite model strategies as appropriate.
- Mentor and provide technical leadership to junior and mid-level BI developers through code reviews, best-practice guidance, and knowledge sharing.
- Ensure data quality, lineage, and compliance with insurance regulatory and data-privacy requirements across all delivered solutions.
Required skills:
- 7+ years of professional BI/analytics experience, with at least 4 years dedicated to Power BI development in production environments.
- Demonstrable insurance industry experience (P&C;, life, health, or reinsurance) and fluency with insurance data and metrics such as premiums, claims, reserves, loss/combined ratios, and underwriting.
- Expert-level DAX — context transition, time intelligence, CALCULATE patterns, iterators, and variables — and advanced Power Query (M) transformation skills.
- Robust dimensional data modeling expertise (star schema, relationships, cardinality, RLS) and proven ability to optimize large tabular models for performance.
- Advanced SQL and experience integrating Power BI with enterprise data sources (SQL Server, Azure SQL, Synapse, Databricks, or comparable).
- Hands-on experience with Power BI Service administration — workspaces, deployment pipelines, gateways, dataset refresh, and capacity/Premium concepts.
- Proficiency with performance and modeling tools such as DAX Studio and Tabular Editor.
- Strong stakeholder communication skills, with a track record of translating ambiguous business requirements into delivered analytics.
Preferred Skills:
- Microsoft certification (PL-300 Power BI Data Analyst Associate, or Fabric/Azure data certifications).
- Experience with Microsoft Fabric, Azure Data Factory, or modern lakehouse architectures.
- Exposure to actuarial or regulatory reporting (e.g., IFRS 17, Solvency II, NAIC) within an insurance context.
- Familiarity with version control (Git), CI/CD for BI assets, and PowerShell or the Power BI REST APIs for automation.
- Experience with Python or R for advanced analytics integration within Power BI.
