Key Responsibilities
Database Administration and Operations
- Administer, monitor and maintain Oracle databases across production, staging and development environments within client estates.
- Perform installations, patching, upgrades and configuration changes, including quarterly Release Update cycles, within approved change windows.
- Manage users, roles, profiles, privileges and auditing, and enforce access standards that satisfy client and regulatory requirements.
- Administer tablespaces, storage, ASM disk groups and capacity growth, raising forecasts before capacity becomes an incident.
- Support Oracle RAC, Data Guard and standby environments, including planned switchover and failover testing.
Incident,
Request and Escalation Management
- Own incidents, service requests and problem records end to end within agreed SLA targets, keeping ticket records accurate and current.
- Triage and resolve escalations raised by the service desk, and engage senior specialists or Oracle Support with a complete, well-evidenced handover when required.
- Participate in the on-call rotation and provide out-of-hours support for severity 1 and severity 2 incidents.
- Conduct root cause analysis on recurring incidents and drive permanent corrective actions through the problem management process.
- Contribute to major incident bridges, providing explicit and timely status updates to service delivery managers and client stakeholders.
Performance, Backup and Recovery
- Monitor database health and performance using AWR, ADDM, ASH, Oracle Enterprise Manager and the client's monitoring toolset.
- Tune SQL, indexes and instance parameters, and work with application teams to remediate poorly performing code.
- Design, implement and validate backup and recovery strategies using RMAN, including scheduled restore testing.
- Execute recovery operations and point-in-time recovery, and take part in disaster recovery drills and documented failover exercises.
- Manage data movement activities including Data Pump exports and imports, non-production refreshes, and database cloning.
Automation, Documentation and Collaboration
- Automate routine administration and health checks using shell scripting,
PL/SQL and the team's automation tooling.
- Maintain runbooks, knowledge base articles and as-built documentation so that more issues are resolved at first contact.
- Mentor junior engineers, review their work and raise the quality of shift handovers.
- Partner with cloud, infrastructure, network and application teams on migrations, upgrades and platform initiatives, including Oracle workloads running on Azure, AWS or Oracle Cloud Infrastructure.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in computer science, information technology or engineering, or equivalent practical experience.
- Four to seven years of hands-on Oracle database administration experience, including a track record of resolving complex escalations independently.
- Strong working knowledge of Oracle 12c, 18c and 19c on Linux and Unix platforms.
- Demonstrated experience with RMAN backup and recovery, Data Guard and Data Pump.
- Proven performance tuning experience using AWR, ASH and execution plan analysis.
- Practical Linux administration and shell scripting skills, together with solid PL/SQL.
- Experience working to formal ITIL processes for incident, problem and change management within a ticketing platform such as Jira Service Management or ServiceNow.
- Willingness to work rotational shifts, including nights and weekends, as part of a 24x7 support roster.
- Clear written and spoken English, with confidence in client-facing communication.
