Job Summary The Operation Theatre Technician is responsible for assisting the surgical and medical team during procedures, preparing the Operation Theatre, maintaining surgical instruments and equipment, ensuring proper sterilization, and following all hospital infection-control and safety protocols.
Key Responsibilities
- Prepare the Operation Theatre before every scheduled and emergency procedure.
- Check the availability and functioning of OT equipment, surgical instruments, machines, and emergency equipment.
- Arrange surgical instruments, OT sets, consumables, implants, and other required materials as per the procedure.
- Assist surgeons, anesthetists, nurses, and other OT staff during surgical procedures.
- Maintain strict aseptic and sterile techniques inside the OT.
- Handle surgical instruments properly and maintain the sterile field.
- Perform or assist with cleaning, disinfection, sterilization, packing, and storage of surgical instruments.
- Check sterilization indicators and maintain proper sterilization records.
- Ensure proper counting of instruments, needles, swabs, gauze, and other items before, during, and after surgery.
- Assist in shifting and positioning patients safely on the OT table.
- Ensure availability and functioning of anesthesia equipment, suction, cautery, monitors, oxygen, and other required equipment.
- Assist during emergency procedures whenever required.
- Maintain OT stock and inform the OT In-Charge regarding shortages or expired items.
- Check expiry dates and maintain proper storage of medicines, consumables, and sterile supplies as applicable.
- Follow hospital policies regarding infection prevention, biomedical waste management, patient safety, and fire safety.
- Ensure proper disposal and segregation of biomedical waste as per hospital protocol.
- Maintain cleanliness and readiness of the OT before and after every procedure.
- Assist with post-operative cleaning and preparation of the OT for the next procedure.
- Maintain OT registers, checklists, sterilization records, equipment records, and other required documentation.
- Report any equipment malfunction, shortage, breakage, contamination, or safety issue immediately to the concerned senior.
- Maintain patient confidentiality and professional conduct at all times.
- Coordinate effectively with the OT, ICU, nursing, CSSD, laboratory, blood bank, and other departments when required.
- Participate in emergency duties, rotational shifts, night duties, weekends, and holidays as per the duty roster.
- Perform any other OT-related responsibilities assigned by the OT In-Charge or Hospital Administration.
Required Qualification
- Diploma/B.Sc. in Operation Theatre Technology or equivalent qualification.
- Relevant experience in a hospital/Operation Theatre is preferred.
- Experience in cardiac OT/Cathlab or superspeciality hospital will be an added advantage.
Required Skills
- Good knowledge of surgical instruments and OT procedures.
- Knowledge of sterilization and infection-control practices.
- Ability to work efficiently during emergency situations.
- Positive communication and coordination skills.
- Ability to work as part of a multidisciplinary team.
- Responsible, punctual, disciplined, and attentive to detail.
- Ability to work under pressure and follow instructions accurately.
Key Performance Expectations
- OT readiness before scheduled procedures.
- Proper instrument and consumable availability.
- Strict compliance with sterilization and infection-control protocols.
- Accurate instrument, swab, and needle counting.
- Proper maintenance of OT documentation and records.
- Safe handling of patients, equipment, and surgical instruments.
- Immediate reporting of any discrepancy, shortage, or equipment failure.
Working Conditions
- Rotational shifts, including night shifts and emergency duties.
- Exposure to surgical procedures, blood, biological materials, and medical equipment.
- Strict compliance with hospital dress code, PPE, infection-control, and safety protocols is mandatory.
Note: The employee must strictly follow all hospital policies, SOPs, infection-control guidelines, and instructions issued by the OT In-Charge and Hospital Administration. Pay: ₹15,000.00 - ₹25,000.00 per month
