Job Summary and Purpose

Naval Architecture for Shipbuilding Operations is responsible for delivering the fundamental design and engineering aspects that shape the initial framework of shipbuilding projects. This role ensuring the technical and functional viability of ship designs while meeting safety, regulatory, and operational requirements. By coordinating with a multidisciplinary team, the AM Naval Architecture collaborates closely with project management, production, and quality assurance teams to optimize design efficiency and address technical challenges.

This position is central to achieving project feasibility, cost-effectiveness, and innovation in design to meet client and regulatory requirements.

The purpose of the AM Naval Architecture role is to support the shipyards design and engineering efforts, establishing clear technical frameworks for each shipbuilding project. This role focuses on developing initial designs that align with the project's functional requirements, performance criteria, and budgetary considerations. By supporting concept validation, regulatory compliance, and collaboration with classification societies, the AM Naval Architecture contributes to the shipyards reputation for delivering quality, efficiency, and innovation in ship design.

This position is essential to ensuring that all basic engineering and design plans support the shipyard’s long-term goals for growth and operational excellence.

The ideal candidates should possess the necessary knowledge, skill and experience to do the design & drawing of piping standard components & drawings like plot plan, equipment layouts, interconnection diagrams, piping general arrangement drawings, piping isometrics.

Accountabilities

Functional:

- Develop design deliverables pertaining to Repair/New Built/Conversion of ship and Offshore Structures, Rig with specialty in Piping, Engineering & Systems domain.
- Develop initial design concepts for new ship projects based on client requirements, operational needs, and industry best practices.
- Define principal particulars such as length, breadth, depth, draft, and displacement of vessels.
- Perform feasibility studies and trade-off analyses to select optimal design configurations.
- Ensure compliance with ship classification society rules (Lloyd’s Register, ABS, DNV, etc.), SOLAS, MARPOL, and IMO regulations.
- Conduct hydrodynamic assessments including resistance, propulsion, maneuverability, and seakeeping analysis.
- Perform structural analysis using Finite Element Methods (FEM) to validate hull strength, fatigue life, and structural integrity.
- Ensure optimal weight distribution, trim, and stability through hydrostatic and hydrodynamic calculations.
- Develop intact and damaged stability calculations to ensure compliance with IMO, SOLAS, and classification society standards.
- Oversee damage stability analysis and subdivision calculations to enhance survivability in case of flooding.
- Prepare load line assessments to ensure compliance with regulatory freeboard requirements.
- Develop project timelines, resource allocation plans, and milestone schedules.
- Coordinate with Production, Procurement, Quality Control, and Engineering teams to ensure design feasibility and manufacturability.
- Optimize design processes to minimize project costs while maintaining quality.
- Develop design drawings, general arrangement (GA) plans, midship sections, shell expansion drawings, and machinery layout diagrams.




- Ensure proper documentation and submission of design plans to classification societies and regulatory bodies.
- Address comments from classification societies, flag states, and owners regarding design modifications.
- Identify potential design risks and perform Failure Mode and Effects Analysis (FMEA).
- Develop mitigation strategies for structural failures, stability issues, and hydrodynamic inefficiencies.
- Ensure that design solutions comply with Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS) and International Maritime Dangerous Goods Code (IMDG) standards.
- Ensure regulatory compliance in all quality control activities, aligning with ISO 9001:2015 for quality management, ISO 45001:2018 for occupational health and safety, ISO 14001:2015 for environmental protection, and industry-specific product certification standards for shipbuilding/ Ship repair.
- Integrate computer-aided design (CAD) tools such as AutoCAD, Rhino, Siemens NX, or ShipConstructor for detailed modeling.
- Optimize hull forms and propulsion systems for reduced fuel consumption and emissions.

Financial:

- Monitor cost of design deliverable creation, validation and outsourcing to ensure adherence to planned budgets and avoidance of cost overrun.

People and Behavior:

- Provide technical advice / guidance to the clients on matters relating to technical feasibility, applicable Class Rules, National or international standards and Flag requirements in areas of technical expertise.
- Maintain a positive relationship with our clients and internal stakeholders.
- Present the deliverable with the internal / external client and be able to suggest solutions where appropriate.
- Understand customer requirements and work closely with all engineering teams from technology development / concept development, estimating the project timelines and complete assigned projects on time with adhering to engineering standards & Process.
- Coordinate with interdisciplinary disciplines as well as with Clients and Vendors, Participate and present with critical design changes & concept reviews, other technical discussion with engineering team.
- Interact with Consulting firms for design outsourcing activity.
- Proactively advise section head Basic Design Engineering & Systems towards improving/setting up of Infrastructure / Design Facilities and design related software’s of mega projects.

Interactions and Working Relationships

Internal:

- Project Management Team

Purpose: To align the design phase with project timelines, deliverables, and client specifications. The AM Naval Architecture collaborates with project managers to integrate design objectives with scheduling, resource allocation, and bsigudget constraints, ensudering project feasibility and adherence to timelines.

- 2. Production and Fabrication Team

Purpose: To ensure that the design is compatible with manufacturing capabilities and processes. Regular interaction with production allows for adjustments in design that enhance manufacturability, minimize rework, and support efficient construction workflows, particularly in areas like hull fabrication and assembly.

- 3. Quality Assurance and Quality Control (QA/QC) Team

Purpose: To integrate quality standards into the design and engineering plans. By working closely with QA/QC, the design AM can ensure that designs meet internal quality benchmarks and industry standards, reducing quality risks in the later phases of construction.

- 4. Procurement and Supply Chain Team

Purpose: To coordinate on material specifications, lead times,



and availability for critical components identified in the design phase. Close collaboration with procurement ensures that the selected materials and components align with design requirements, cost targets, and delivery schedules.

External:

- Clients and Shipowners
- Purpose: To understand and translate client requirements, preferences, and specifications into the design. Regular interaction with clients helps in refining the design according to operational needs, performance goals, and aesthetic preferences. This ensures client satisfaction and alignment of design features with the intended purpose of the vessel.
- 2. Classification Societies (e.g., ABS, DNV, Lloyd’s Register)
- Purpose: To ensure the design complies with classification rules and safety regulations. The AM Naval Architecture and Engineering coordinates with classification societies to review designs, gain necessary approvals, and address any changes or updates required by regulatory standards. This helps in achieving certification and ensuring vessel seaworthiness.
- 3. Regulatory Bodies (e.g., IMO, SOLAS, MARPOL)
- Purpose: To incorporate national and international regulatory standards into the design process. Collaborating with regulatory bodies ensures compliance with environmental, safety, and operational guidelines, reducing risks of non-compliance and potential fines, and enhancing the vessel’s marketability.
- 4. Suppliers and Equipment Manufacturers
- Purpose: To source materials and select equipment that meet design specifications and operational needs. By working closely with suppliers, the AM Naval Architecture ensures that chosen components (e.g., engines, navigation systems, safety equipment) are compatible with the design and are available within the project timeline and budget.

Qualifications, Experience and Skills

- Bachelor’s Degree in Naval Architecture, Marine Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related field (Master’s Degree is advantageous).
- Professional Certifications in project management (e.g., PMP), marine engineering, or naval architecture are desirable.
- Certification in Quality Management Systems (e.g., Six Sigma, Lean) or familiarity with Design for Manufacturability (DFM) principles is beneficial.
- 5+ years of experience in any shipyard (or) ship repair facility (or) in a design consultancy firm.
- Extensive background in ship design fundamentals, including hull form, hydrostatics, structural integrity, stability analysis, and marine systems.
- Proven experience working with classification societies and regulatory bodies to ensure compliance with standards such as DNV, ABS, or equivalent.
- Demonstrated experience in managing multidisciplinary design and engineering teams and coordinating with production, quality, and project management departments.
- During the tenure in design department candidate should have experience of:
- Preparation of PTS for equipment and material
- Preparing technical specifications for work for offloading and turnkey subcontracting
- Strong expertise in CAD software (e.g., AutoCAD, Rhino) and marine engineering software (e.g., NAPA, ShipConstructor, Aveva Marine).
- Detailed design knowledge and piping drawings by using Integrated CAD/CAM software programs such as NAPA/FORAN/TRIBON/AVEVA MARINE.
- Expertise in performing pipe strength and stress analysis by using software programs such as CAESAR-II, PIPENET, AUTOPIPE etc. Adequate skill to work on any 3D software like PDS,PDMS & SP-3D.
- Proficiency in hydrodynamic and structural analysis tools to validate design integrity and operational performance.
- Familiarity with maritime regulatory requirements and international shipbuilding standards (e.g., IMO, SOLAS, MARPOL).
- Ability to conduct feasibility studies, cost-benefit analyses, and risk assessments to support initial design and engineering decisions.
