Role & responsibilities
Weather Analysis and Forecasting
- Analyze real-time meteorological data from multiple sources (satellite, radar, ground observations, NWP models)
- Setup and configuration of the WRF model.
- Generate short, medium, and extended-range weather forecasts
- Interpretation of ensemble outputs with uncertainty assessment for decision support.
Impact-Based Forecasting (IBF)
- Translate weather forecasts into potential impacts on communities, infrastructure, and sectors
- Support development of impact-based forecasting products and thresholds
- Collaborate with disaster management agencies to align forecasts with early action protocols.
Data Integration and DSS Support
- Integrate meteorological data into decision support systems and digital platforms
- Support development of forecast layers and weather-driven indicators for DSS applications
- Collaborate with GIS, AI/ML and Application development teams for data-driven forecasting solutions
Early Warning and Communication
- Prepare weather advisories, bulletins, and early warning messages
- Ensure clarity, accuracy, and usability of forecast information for different user groups
- Support dissemination of warnings through multiple communication channels
Model Evaluation and Improvement
- Evaluate performance of forecast models and provide feedback for improvement
- Support calibration and validation of forecasting tools and methodologies
- Contribute to development of localized forecasting approaches
Capacity Building and Stakeholder Engagement
- Conduct training sessions and regular capacity-building programs for NMHSs and stakeholders on weather forecasting (regional and global scales), modeling techniques, and impact-based forecasting approaches.
- Provide technical guidance and support to partner agencies.
- Participate in workshops, simulations, and early warning system strengthening activities.
Documentation and Reporting
- Prepare technical reports, forecast summaries, and documentation
- Maintain records of forecasts, warnings, and verification results
- Contribute to project reports and knowledge products
Additional Responsibilities
- Perform other tasks as assigned by the supervisor in line with project needs and priorities.
- Conduct research studies across relevant sectors based on emerging trends and future opportunities to support strategic planning and innovation.

Preferred candidate profile
Education:
- Bachelors or Masters degree in Meteorology, Atmospheric Science, Climate Science, or a related field
Experience:
- Minimum 24 years of experience in weather forecasting, climate analysis, or operational meteorology
- Experience working with numerical weather prediction (NWP) models and forecasting systems
- Familiarity with meteorological data sources (satellite, radar, AWS, reanalysis, global forecast models)
- Experience in interpreting ensemble forecasts and probabilistic outputs
- Experience in preparing weather advisories, bulletins, and early warning products
- Familiarity with impact-based forecasting (IBF) approaches is highly desirable
- Experience working with NMHSs, disaster management agencies, or regional climate centers is an advantage
Technical Skills (Desirable):
- Experience with meteorological tools such as GrADS, Python, R, GIS platforms
- Familiarity with data visualization and dashboard tools
- Understanding of climate variability drivers (e.g., ENSO, MJO)
- Knowledge of hydrometeorological hazards (cyclones, floods, droughts, heatwaves, lightning)
- Experience integrating meteorological data into DSS platforms
Personal Qualities:
- Strong analytical and forecasting skills
- Ability to interpret complex scientific data for operational use
- Solid communication skills for translating forecasts into actionable messages
- Ability to work in multidisciplinary teams
- Adaptability in dynamic operational environments
