Head – Inbound & Outbound Logistics

Position Details

Designation: Head – Inbound & Outbound Logistics

Function: Supply Chain / Logistics

Location: Angul, Odisha

Reporting To: Chief Supply Chain Officer / Business Head

Role Purpose

To lead and manage the end-to-end inbound and outbound logistics operations, ensuring timely, cost-effective and safe movement of raw materials, consumables, finished goods and other materials across the plant and distribution network.

The role will be responsible for developing and executing the logistics strategy, optimising transportation and material movement, improving fleet and transporter productivity, ensuring service-level adherence, and driving digitisation and cost optimisation across the logistics value chain.

Key Responsibilities

1. Inbound Logistics

- Lead end-to-end inbound logistics for raw materials, consumables, spares, equipment and other plant requirements.

- Ensure timely availability of materials at the plant in line with production and maintenance requirements.

- Plan and optimise inbound transportation from suppliers, ports, mines, warehouses and other sourcing locations.

- Monitor vehicle placement, turnaround time, transit time and unloading efficiency.

- Develop mechanisms to minimise detention, demurrage, waiting time and logistics-related production disruptions.

- Coordinate with Procurement, Stores, Operations and suppliers for effective inbound planning.

2. Outbound Logistics

- Lead outbound movement of finished steel and other products from plant to customers, warehouses, stockyards, ports and other destinations.

- Ensure timely vehicle placement and dispatch in line with customer commitments and sales plans.

- Optimise transportation modes and route planning based on destination, product, volume and service requirements.

- Monitor dispatch schedules, transit performance, delivery adherence and customer service levels.

- Drive reduction in transit losses, damages, delays and logistics-related customer complaints.

3. Transportation & Fleet Management

- Develop and manage the transporter/vendor ecosystem for road, rail and other applicable modes.

- Negotiate and manage transportation contracts, freight rates, service-level agreements and commercial terms.

- Ensure optimum utilisation of available fleet and transportation capacity.

- Establish systems for transporter performance monitoring and benchmarking.

- Drive improvement in vehicle turnaround time, fleet utilisation and load factor.

- Ensure compliance with statutory requirements related to transportation and vehicle operations.

4. Logistics Cost Optimisation

- Develop initiatives to reduce overall logistics cost per tonne.

- Identify opportunities for route optimisation, mode optimisation, consolidation and improved vehicle utilisation.

- Monitor freight costs, detention, demurrage, handling and other logistics expenses.





- Establish cost benchmarks and analyse variances against budgets and approved rates.

- Drive continuous improvement projects resulting in measurable logistics savings.

5. Logistics Planning & Network Optimisation

- Develop integrated logistics plans aligned with production, procurement, inventory and sales requirements.

- Optimise the movement network across plant, warehouses, stockyards, customers, ports and other destinations.

- Evaluate opportunities for multimodal transportation, particularly road-rail integration where commercially and operationally viable.

- Develop contingency plans for disruptions in transportation routes, availability and capacity.

- Ensure logistics capacity is aligned with current and projected business requirements.

6. Operations, Safety & Compliance

- Ensure safe handling and movement of materials throughout the logistics chain.

- Establish and monitor logistics safety standards for vehicle movement, loading, unloading and material handling.

- Drive compliance with applicable statutory, regulatory and company requirements.

- Monitor and reduce logistics-related incidents, accidents and unsafe practices.

- Ensure appropriate documentation and controls for material movement.

7. Technology & Digitisation

- Drive digitisation of logistics planning, vehicle tracking, dispatch, documentation and transporter management.

- Leverage GPS, TMS, ERP and analytics platforms for real-time visibility of material movement.

- Develop dashboards for monitoring vehicle placement, turnaround time, freight cost, delivery performance and transporter productivity.

- Identify opportunities for automation and data-driven logistics optimisation.

8. Cross-functional Coordination

- Work closely with Procurement, Sales & Marketing, Production, Stores, Finance, Projects and Plant Operations.

- Align inbound logistics with material availability and production plans.

- Coordinate outbound logistics with customer dispatch requirements and sales commitments.

- Partner with Finance and Commercial teams for freight budgeting, reconciliation and payment controls.

- Resolve critical logistics bottlenecks through cross-functional interventions.

9. Vendor & Stakeholder Management

- Develop robust relationships with transporters, logistics service providers, rail operators, warehouses and other external stakeholders.

- Establish clear performance expectations and service-level metrics for logistics partners.





- Conduct periodic performance reviews and initiate corrective actions for underperformance.

- Ensure transparent and effective vendor governance.

10. Team Leadership

- Lead and develop the inbound and outbound logistics team.

- Establish clear KRAs, KPIs and performance standards.

- Build capability in logistics planning, analytics, vendor management and transportation operations.

- Foster a culture of safety, accountability, cost consciousness and continuous improvement.

Education

- B.E./B.Tech in Mechanical / Industrial / Civil / Logistics / Supply Chain Engineering or equivalent.

- MBA/PGDM in Supply Chain Management, Logistics or Operations preferred.

Experience

- 18–25 years of relevant experience in logistics, transportation, supply chain or material movement, preferably in the steel, metals, mining, manufacturing or other large-scale process industries.

- Strong experience in managing both inbound and outbound logistics operations in a large manufacturing environment.

- Experience handling high-volume road and/or rail logistics operations will be preferred.

- Proven experience in transporter management, logistics contracting, freight negotiation and cost optimisation.

- Experience in managing large logistics teams and multiple external stakeholders.

- Strong exposure to logistics digitisation, transportation analytics and technology-enabled fleet management.
