Qualification: Diploma / B.E. / B.Tech. in Mechanical / Production / Manufacturing Engineering
Job Purpose To support the CNC machine shop in developing, implementing and optimizing machining processes, tooling, cutting parameters, fixtures and CNC programs to achieve productivity, quality, cost and delivery targets.
Key Responsibilities1. CNC Process & Application Engineering
- Develop and optimize CNC machining processes for VMC, HMC, CNC Turning and other machining centres.
- Study component drawings, specifications, tolerances and customer requirements and develop suitable machining strategies.
- Prepare process sheets, operation sequences, tooling lists and machining time estimates.
- Select appropriate cutting tools, tool holders, inserts and machining parameters.
- Optimize cutting speed, feed, depth of cut and tool paths to improve productivity and tool life.
- Conduct process trials and prove out new components on CNC machines.
- Identify and implement opportunities for cycle-time reduction, tool-cost reduction and process improvement.
1. CNC Programming & Process Development
- Develop, modify and optimize CNC programs as per component requirements.
- Review existing programs and identify opportunities for improvement.
- Coordinate with CNC programmers, setters and operators for successful implementation of programs.
- Support CAM programming / tool-path development where required.
- Ensure programs are properly documented, controlled and validated before production.
1. Tooling & Fixture Development
- Select suitable cutting tools and recommend tooling solutions for different materials and applications.
- Coordinate with tooling suppliers for technical discussions, trials and new tooling development.
- Assist in development and improvement of jigs, fixtures, soft jaws and work-holding solutions.
- Conduct tooling trials and evaluate tool performance, tool life and machining efficiency.
1. New Product / New Part Development
- Support new product introduction (NPI) and prototype development.
- Review customer drawings and identify manufacturing requirements and challenges.
- Develop machining processes for new components and conduct process proving.
- Prepare and maintain process documentation including routing, setup sheets, tool lists and machining parameters.
- Coordinate with Production, Quality, Tool Room and Purchase teams during new part development.
1. Productivity & Cost Improvement
- Monitor and analyze CNC machining cycle times and identify bottlenecks.
- Implement Kaizen, Lean Manufacturing and continuous improvement initiatives.
- Reduce machine idle time, setup time, tool consumption, rejection and rework.
- Conduct tool-life studies and machining trials.
- Develop and implement standardized machining practices across the shop floor.
1. Quality & Process Control
- Ensure machining processes meet drawing specifications, GD&T; and quality requirements.
- Work closely with the Quality team to resolve dimensional and process-related issues.
- Analyze machining defects, tool wear, vibration, surface finish and dimensional variation.
- Participate in root cause analysis, CAPA, 8D and corrective action activities.
- Support implementation of process controls and mistake-proofing measures.
1. Shop Floor Support
- Provide technical support to CNC setters and operators for machining-related problems.
- Troubleshoot issues related to tooling, fixtures, cutting parameters, work holding and CNC programs.
- Monitor machine performance and provide immediate technical support for critical production issues.
- Train and guide CNC setters/operators on new processes, tools and machining methods.
1. Documentation & Reporting
- Maintain records of machining trials, tool trials, cycle-time studies and process improvements.
- Prepare tooling and machining cost estimates where required.
- Maintain standard operating procedures, setup sheets and process documents.
- Prepare periodic reports on productivity, tool consumption, process improvements and cost savings.
Required Technical Skills
- Strong knowledge of CNC machining processes – VMC, HMC, CNC Turning, etc.
- Valuable understanding of cutting tools, inserts, tool holders and work-holding systems.
- Knowledge of machining of materials such as Aluminium, Steel, Stainless Steel, Titanium, Inconel and other engineering materials will be an advantage.
- Knowledge of GD&T;, engineering drawings and machining tolerances.
- Working knowledge of CAM software such as Mastercam, NX CAM, CATIA, PowerMill or equivalent.
- Knowledge of CNC controls such as Fanuc, Siemens, Mitsubishi, Haas, etc.
- Ability to calculate and optimize machining cycle time and cutting parameters.
- Good knowledge of TPM, Lean Manufacturing, Kaizen and process improvement techniques.
- Strong problem-solving and analytical skills.
Preferred Experience Experience in precision machining / aerospace / defence / automotive / engineering components manufacturing will be preferred.
