Transaction monitoring is the process of continuously reviewing financial transactions to identify suspicious, unusual, or potentially illegal activity, particularly for AML (Anti-Money Laundering) and fraud prevention.
Roles of Transaction Monitoring
Transaction monitoring plays an key role in AML (Anti-Money Laundering), fraud prevention, and financial crime compliance. Its main roles include:
1. Detect suspicious transactions Identifies unusual or abnormal transaction patterns that may indicate money laundering, fraud, or other financial crimes.
2. Prevent money laundering Helps financial institutions detect activities such as structuring, rapid movement of funds, layering, and unexplained cash flows.
3. Identify fraud Detects potentially fraudulent transactions, including unusual payments, account takeovers, and unauthorized transfers.
4. Generate alerts Uses predefined rules, risk indicators, and behavioral analysis to flag transactions requiring further investigation.
5. Investigate customer activity Analysts review alerts, transaction history, customer profiles,
and other relevant information to determine whether activity is legitimate.
Handling Transaction-Related Calls from Clients Handling transaction calls involves assisting clients with transaction queries, payment issues, suspicious activity, and account-related concerns while following security and compliance procedures.
Key responsibilities
1. Verify the client
- Complete the required authentication and security checks.
- Never disclose confidential information before verification.
1. Understand the client's concern
- Listen carefully and identify whether the issue relates to a payment, transfer, cash withdrawal, card transaction, or account activity.
1. Check transaction details
- Review the transaction status, date, amount, beneficiary/merchant details, and relevant account information.
1. Handle transaction disputes
- Assist with unauthorized, failed, declined, duplicated, or pending transactions.
- Raise a dispute or investigation when required.
1. Handle suspicious transaction concerns
- If a client reports an unfamiliar transaction, follow the organization's fraud-reporting and escalation procedures.
