Position Overview
We are looking for a skilled and detail-oriented Design Engineer responsible for developing mechanical designs, 3D CAD models, engineering drawings, and manufacturable components for industrial/automotive/electromechanical applications. The role involves working closely with engineering, manufacturing, procurement, and quality teams to convert design concepts into production-ready solutions.
The ideal candidate should have strong hands-on experience with CAD software such as CATIA, SolidWorks, or Siemens NX, along with a valuable understanding of mechanical design, sheet metal fabrication, welding, tolerances, and engineering principles. Knowledge of FEA/CFD simulation will be an added advantage.
Key Responsibilities
1. Mechanical Design & Development
- Develop detailed 3D CAD models of mechanical components, assemblies, structures, and systems.
- Design enclosures, frames, brackets, supports, busbars, mounting structures, and sheet-metal components.
- Convert conceptual designs and engineering requirements into detailed, production-ready designs.
- Prepare and maintain 2D engineering drawings, including dimensions, GD&T;, material specifications, surface finish, and manufacturing notes.
- Perform design calculations and engineering evaluations to ensure structural integrity, functionality, and reliability.
- Develop new designs as well as modify and optimize existing components based on performance, cost, and manufacturability requirements.
- Ensure designs meet applicable customer, company, safety, quality, and industry standards.
2. CAD & Engineering Tools
- Create and manage complex 3D models,
assemblies, and drawings using CAD platforms such as:
- CATIA
- SolidWorks
- Siemens NX
- Develop accurate parametric models and maintain design configurations.
- Perform assembly checks, interference checks, clearance analysis, and design reviews.
- Maintain proper revision control and engineering documentation.
- Generate BOMs and support manufacturing with accurate design data.
3. Simulation & Engineering Analysis
- Support or perform engineering analysis using FEA and/or CFD tools where applicable.
- Evaluate components for
- Structural strength
- Stress and deformation
- Thermal performance
- Vibration and fatigue
- Fluid/airflow behavior, where applicable
- Interpret simulation results and incorporate design improvements based on analysis findings.
- Work with analysis teams to validate designs before prototype or production release.
4. Manufacturing & Fabrication Knowledge
- Design components with a strong focus on Design for Manufacturing (DFM) and Design for Assembly (DFA).
- Demonstrate practical knowledge of manufacturing processes, including:
- Sheet metal fabrication
- Welding
- Laser cutting
- Bending
- Machining
- Drilling and tapping
- Fastening and assembly
- Understand welding methods, joint design, weld symbols, and fabrication limitations.
- Account for bend allowances, bend radii, material thickness, weld distortion, and fabrication tolerances during design.
- Ensure designs are practical, cost-effective, and suitable for volume manufacturing.
5. Tolerances & Drawing Standards
- Apply appropriate dimensional tolerances and GD&T; based on functional and manufacturing requirements.
- Define critical dimensions and tolerances for proper fit, form, and function.
- Review manufacturing drawings for accuracy, completeness, and manufacturability.
- Resolve dimensional and assembly issues identified during prototype or production stages.
6. Prototype & Product Development
- Support prototype development, assembly, testing, and validation activities.
- Work with manufacturing and suppliers to resolve design and fabrication issues.
- Analyze prototype failures and implement corrective design actions.
- Participate in design reviews, engineering change processes, and product improvement initiatives.
- Support transition of designs from prototype to mass production.
7. Cross-Functional Collaboration
- Coordinate with Manufacturing, Quality, Procurement, Electrical, Testing, and Project Engineering teams.
- Work with suppliers and fabrication vendors to clarify technical requirements and resolve production issues.
- Provide technical support during manufacturing and assembly.
- Communicate design concepts, technical issues, and engineering decisions effectively.
