Data Center Advisory Consultant (Independent / Retainer Engagement)

Location: Nagpur, Maharashtra (with periodic site visits; remote-hybrid negotiable)

Engagement Type: Consulting / Advisory retainer (project-based or part-time, not a full-time employment role).

About the Engagement

Basant Agro Tech (I) Ltd., an established player in agricultural inputs (seeds, fertilizers, irrigation), is evaluating the launch of a new business vertical: a commercial colocation data center facility in Maharashtra. We are seeking an experienced independent consultant or advisory partner to guide our leadership team through feasibility validation, technical planning, and go/no-go decision-making before committing capital to construction.

This is an advisory engagement; the consultant is not expected to execute construction but to independently validate assumptions, review vendor/EPC proposals, and advise our management on what a realistic, bankable data center project looks like at our proposed scale.

Key Responsibilities

- Independently review and stress-test our current feasibility model (site, capex, tier classification, revenue assumptions) and flag gaps before further investment decisions are made
- Advise on right-sizing the facility (capacity in kW/MW, Tier III vs Tier IV, rack density) based on realistic regional client demand, not vendor-supplied assumptions
- Guide site and power feasibility assessment, including coordination approach with the state discom (MSEDCL) for dedicated power capacity
- Advise on statutory and regulatory approval pathway (land use, environmental clearance, electrical inspectorate, fire NOC, Maharashtra IT/ITeS Policy incentive eligibility)
- Review vendor and EPC proposals (power, cooling, fire/security systems) for technical soundness and pricing reasonableness




- Advise on realistic OPEX modeling, particularly power cost pass-through structure to clients, staffing requirements, and AMC/maintenance costs
- Help identify and validate potential anchor tenant segments (regional BFSI, healthcare, MSPs, agri-tech enterprises) before capacity commitments are finalized
- Provide an honest, independent go/no-go recommendation to leadership at each major decision gate

Required Experience & Background

Minimum 10 years of hands-on experience in data center design, construction, or operations (facility engineering, power/cooling systems, or colocation business operations)

Average candidate profile: 15–20 years, ideally including at least one full data center build-out from feasibility through commissioning

Prior experience with Tier III/Tier IV facility design and Uptime Institute standards

Familiarity with Indian regulatory approval processes for data centers (state IT/ITeS policies, environmental clearance, electrical inspectorate)

Experience evaluating or negotiating with power utilities/discoms for dedicated industrial power capacity

Prior exposure to colocation business economics (rack pricing, power pass-through models, occupancy ramp planning) is a strong plus

Comfortable working with a leadership team that is recent to the data center industry, able to explain technical and financial tradeoffs in plain, non-technical terms

What We're Looking For

- Independent judgment, this is not a role for someone who will simply validate whatever assumptions are presented and Willingness to say clearly if the numbers, scale, or timeline don't work, rather than defaulting to optimism
- Practical, India-specific experience over theoretical/international benchmarks alone
