Job Title: General Surgeon
Department: General Surgery
Reports To: Medical Superintendent / Medical Director
1. Job Summary
The General Surgeon is responsible for providing comprehensive surgical care, including patient evaluation, diagnosis, pre-operative assessment, surgical procedures, post-operative management, emergency surgical care, and follow-up. The surgeon will ensure safe, ethical, and evidence-based surgical practice in compliance with hospital policies and NABH standards.
1. Key ResponsibilitiesA. Clinical Responsibilities
- Conduct comprehensive assessment and clinical examination of surgical patients.
- Diagnose and manage surgical conditions requiring medical or operative intervention.
- Develop appropriate treatment plans based on clinical findings and investigations.
- Order and interpret relevant laboratory and imaging investigations.
- Obtain informed consent and explain the proposed procedure, risks, benefits, and alternatives to patients/attendants.
- Perform surgical procedures within the scope of professional qualification and hospital privileges.
- Provide appropriate pre-operative and post-operative care.
- Monitor patient progress and modify treatment plans when required.
- Provide follow-up care and ensure continuity of treatment.
B. Operative Responsibilities
- Perform elective and emergency general surgical procedures as per assigned privileges.
- Conduct appropriate pre-operative evaluation and ensure patient readiness for surgery.
- Coordinate with the OT, anesthesia, nursing, and other relevant departments.
- Ensure proper surgical safety procedures, including patient identification and surgical-site verification.
- Maintain appropriate operative notes and surgical documentation.
- Participate in post-operative rounds and monitor for complications.
C. Emergency Surgical Care
- Assess and manage patients presenting with acute surgical emergencies.
- Provide timely intervention for conditions such as acute abdomen, trauma, bleeding, abscesses, and other surgical emergencies within the scope of practice.
- Coordinate with Emergency Medicine, Anesthesia, ICU, and other specialties when required.
- Initiate appropriate stabilization and arrange emergency surgery when indicated.
D. Inpatient & Outpatient Care
- Conduct surgical OPD consultations.
- Review admitted surgical patients regularly.
- Evaluate investigation reports and determine appropriate management.
- Counsel patients and relatives regarding diagnosis, treatment, surgery, expected outcomes, and follow-up.
- Prepare discharge summaries, prescriptions, and follow-up plans.
E. Pre-Operative & Post-Operative Management
- Conduct appropriate pre-operative assessment and optimization.
- Review laboratory and imaging investigations before surgery.
- Identify surgical risk factors and coordinate specialist consultation when required.
- Monitor post-operative patients for complications.
- Manage wound care, drains, dressings, and other post-operative requirements.
- Ensure timely escalation of complications or deterioration.
F. Patient Safety & Quality
- Follow surgical safety protocols and hospital SOPs.
- Ensure compliance with the WHO Surgical Safety Checklist and applicable hospital requirements.
- Maintain patient privacy, dignity, and confidentiality.
- Report adverse events, complications, and near misses promptly.
- Participate in morbidity and mortality reviews and quality improvement activities.
G. Infection Prevention & Control
- Strictly follow hospital infection prevention and control policies.
- Adhere to hand hygiene and appropriate PPE requirements.
- Follow aseptic and sterile techniques during surgical procedures.
- Ensure appropriate antimicrobial use in accordance with hospital protocols.
- Participate in surgical-site infection prevention initiatives.
- Support compliance with infection control audits and NABH requirements.
H. Documentation
- Maintain accurate and complete patient medical records.
- Document history, examination, diagnosis, investigations, treatment, and progress notes.
- Complete pre-operative assessment and surgical consent documentation.
- Maintain accurate operative notes and post-operative records.
- Prepare discharge summaries and referral notes as required.
- Ensure medical records comply with hospital and NABH standards.
I. Multidisciplinary Coordination
- Coordinate with Anesthesiologists, Physicians, Radiologists, Pathologists, Nursing Staff, OT Staff, and other specialists.
- Participate in multidisciplinary case discussions when required.
- Provide clear clinical instructions to the nursing and supporting teams.
- Coordinate referrals and transfers when specialized care is required.
1. Qualifications
- MBBS from a recognized medical institution.
- MS / DNB in General Surgery from a recognized institution.
- Valid registration with the Kerala State Medical Council / applicable medical council is mandatory.
- Additional recognized surgical training or fellowships will be an advantage.
1. Mandatory Requirement
Valid Medical Council Registration is mandatory. Candidates must possess the required medical registration and professional credentials to practice as a General Surgeon in Kerala.
1. Experience
- Previous experience in General Surgery is preferred.
- Experience in elective and emergency surgical procedures is desirable.
- Experience in a NABH-accredited hospital will be an advantage.

1. Working Conditions
- OPD, inpatient, OT, and emergency surgical duties as assigned.
- Participation in emergency/on-call duties as per hospital requirements.
- Willingness to work weekends and holidays when scheduled.
Job Type: Full time Pay: From ₹150,000.00 per month
