Group Chief Operating Officer (COO) cum Chief of Staff
Position Overview
We are seeking a highly experienced, execution-focused and commercially astute Group Chief Operating Officer cum Chief of Staff to work closely with the Group CEO in managing and monitoring the operations of all businesses and functional departments across the Group.
This is a senior group-level leadership position responsible for converting the CEO’s vision and strategic priorities into measurable execution. The incumbent will oversee business performance on behalf of the CEO, establish strong operating discipline, coordinate with business and functional heads, monitor critical initiatives and provide the CEO with accurate daily, weekly and periodic management reports.
The ideal candidate will have more than 20 years of leadership experience in large and professionally managed organisations. Prior exposure to management consulting, business transformation or strategy consulting will be an added advantage.
Key Responsibilities
Group Operations and Performance Management
Oversee and monitor the operations of all businesses, companies and functional departments across the Group on behalf of the Group CEO.
Work closely with the CEOs, Managing Directors, business heads and functional leaders of the Group’s businesses.
Ensure that each business operates in accordance with approved strategies, budgets, policies, targets and timelines.
Establish a disciplined operating rhythm through daily, weekly, monthly and quarterly business reviews.
Track the performance of all major departments, including:
Sales and business development
Marketing
Finance and accounts
Human resources
Technology
Operations and service delivery
Customer experience
Legal and compliance
Administration
Procurement
Academic and institutional operations, wherever applicable
Identify operational bottlenecks, performance gaps and delayed decisions, and ensure timely corrective action.
Drive accountability among business and functional heads without unnecessarily interfering in routine departmental responsibilities.
Establish standard operating procedures, control systems and performance-management frameworks across the Group.
Promote collaboration, resource sharing and operational synergies among different Group businesses.
Chief of Staff to the Group CEO
Serve as the principal coordination and execution partner to the Group CEO.
Translate the CEO’s strategic direction into clearly defined priorities, responsibilities, timelines and measurable outcomes.
Act as the central link between the CEO and the Group’s leadership teams.
Ensure that decisions taken by the CEO are properly communicated, documented, assigned and implemented.
Prepare the CEO for business reviews, management meetings, board meetings, investor discussions and important external engagements.
Manage the CEO’s strategic agenda by prioritising critical operational, financial and organisational matters.
Review information submitted to the CEO and ensure that it is accurate, complete, concise and decision-oriented.
Attend important meetings on behalf of or alongside the CEO and ensure appropriate follow-up.
Maintain a decision tracker covering key approvals, commitments, responsibilities, deadlines and pending actions.
Handle sensitive and confidential matters with the highest level of discretion and integrity.
CEO Reporting and Management Information Systems
Design and maintain a comprehensive Group-level management reporting framework.
Provide the CEO with concise and accurate reports based on the urgency and importance of each matter.
Daily reporting may include
Revenue and sales performance
Collections and cash-flow position
Customer or operational escalations
Critical technology or service-delivery issues
Regulatory or legal developments
Major employee or leadership matters
High-priority approvals and pending decisions
Progress on time-sensitive projects
Weekly reporting may include
Business-wise performance against targets
Department-wise KPIs
Budget versus actual performance
Sales pipeline and conversion
Marketing performance and return on investment
Collections, receivables and working capital
Recruitment and employee productivity
Customer experience and service quality
Technology-project status
Legal, compliance and risk matters
Status of strategic initiatives
Key concerns requiring CEO intervention
Develop executive dashboards that provide the CEO with a clear view of the entire Group.
Ensure that reports focus on exceptions, risks, missed targets, corrective measures and decisions required.
Verify the accuracy of information received from different businesses and departments.
Reduce excessive reporting by presenting the CEO with prioritised, actionable management information.
Strategy Execution and Transformation
Convert the Group’s strategic plans into practical execution roadmaps.
Monitor major strategic initiatives, expansion plans, new business launches and transformation programmes.
Lead cross-functional and cross-business projects that require coordination across multiple departments.
Identify opportunities for revenue growth, cost optimisation, automation and productivity improvement.
Support the evaluation and implementation of new technologies, management systems and digital platforms.
Establish project-management disciplines for critical Group initiatives.
Ensure that approved projects remain within defined scope, budget and timelines.
Conduct structured reviews of underperforming businesses and recommend turnaround measures.
Lead special projects and strategic assignments directly entrusted by the CEO.
Governance and Leadership Coordination
Establish clear accountability and decision-making structures across the Group.
Organise and lead periodic Group leadership meetings and business performance reviews.
Prepare agendas, performance dashboards, decision papers and action trackers for management meetings.
Ensure that all agreed actions are assigned to specific owners with defined completion dates.
Follow up rigorously until commitments are completed.
Escalate material delays, risks and performance concerns to the CEO in a timely manner.
Encourage a culture of ownership, transparency, speed and data-driven decision-making.
Facilitate effective communication between corporate functions and operating businesses.
Help resolve interdepartmental issues and eliminate duplication or conflict between teams.
Financial and Commercial Oversight
Work closely with the Group CFO and finance teams to review financial and operational performance.
Monitor revenue, profitability, costs, cash flows, working capital and capital expenditure across businesses.
Ensure that every business operates within its approved annual budget.
Review significant commercial proposals, contracts and capital-allocation requests before submission to the CEO.
Analyse the commercial viability and strategic relevance of new initiatives.
Monitor the financial performance of newly launched or acquired businesses.
Support annual budgeting, business planning and long-term forecasting.
Ensure that financial and operational KPIs are aligned with the Group’s overall objectives.
Risk, Compliance and Organisational Effectiveness
Work with legal, compliance, finance and internal audit teams to identify and mitigate operational risks.
Ensure that businesses comply with Group policies, internal controls and applicable regulatory requirements.
Monitor major litigation, regulatory matters, contractual obligations and compliance deadlines.
Strengthen crisis-management and business-continuity processes.
Review organisational structures and recommend improvements where responsibilities are unclear or duplicated.
Work with HR leadership on succession planning, leadership development and performance management.
Help the CEO assess the effectiveness and accountability of senior leaders.
Ensure that leadership teams have the right resources, capabilities and organisational support to achieve their targets.
Candidate Profile
More than 20 years of qualified experience, with substantial leadership responsibility in a large, diversified or professionally managed organisation.
Proven experience as a COO, Chief of Staff, Business Head, Transformation Leader, Senior Management Consultant or similar executive position.
Experience overseeing multiple businesses, locations, departments or profit centres.
Strong exposure to business operations, strategy execution, performance management and organisational transformation.
Management consulting or strategy consulting experience will be an added advantage.
MBA or equivalent postgraduate qualification from a reputed institution is preferred.
Strong understanding of financial statements, budgets, business plans, operating metrics and management dashboards.
Demonstrated ability to work directly with promoters, founders, CEOs, boards and senior leadership teams.
Experience managing large cross-functional and cross-business initiatives.
Excellent analytical, problem-solving and decision-making capabilities.
Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to present complex information clearly and concisely.
High degree of integrity, confidentiality, maturity and professional judgement.

Willingness to travel between Group offices and business locations whenever required.

Reporting Structure The Group COO cum Chief of Staff will report directly to the Group CEO/Chairman and Managing Director.
All business heads and functional leaders will work closely with the position for performance reviews, strategic execution, management reporting and implementation of decisions taken by the Group CEO.
Nature of the Role
This is not an administrative or conventional coordination position. It is a high-impact executive leadership role with Group-wide visibility and responsibility. The incumbent must be capable of understanding multiple businesses, challenging senior leaders, resolving complex operational matters and ensuring that the CEO’s priorities are executed with discipline, accuracy and speed.
