About the Role
We are looking for an experienced AutoCAD Plant 3D skilled who combines hands-on plant design experience with the ability to extend and automate the platform through custom plugins. You will have worked with OEMs as well as EPC, consulting, or end-user environments, and understand how Plant 3D is used across the full project lifecycle from P&ID; and 3D modeling through isometrics, orthographics, and deliverable extraction. The role is roughly half design/modeling and standards ownership, half development of tools that make the team faster and more consistent.
Key Responsibilities
Plant 3D Design & Engineering
- Develop and maintain 3D piping, equipment, and structural models in AutoCAD Plant 3D for OEM skids, packaged units, and larger plant layouts.
- Create and manage P&IDs; in AutoCAD P&ID; with correct tagging, line lists, and data consistency with the 3D model.
- Generate piping isometrics, orthographic/GA drawings, BOMs, and MTOs.
- Build and maintain piping specs, catalogs, and custom components (pipe, fittings, valves, instruments, supports) per ASME, DIN, ISO, or client standards.
- Configure project setup: templates, title blocks, layer standards, reports, and data exports.
- Perform clash detection and model reviews; coordinate with process, mechanical, structural, and instrumentation teams.
- Support SQLite and SQL Server project databases, including collaboration via Autodesk Vault or ACC where used.
Plugin & Automation Development
- Design, build, and maintain custom plugins for AutoCAD Plant 3D using the Plant 3D .NET API (PnPCommon, PnP3dObjects,
PnIdObjects, Plant Project API) and the AutoCAD ObjectARX / .NET API.
- Automate repetitive workflows such as tag generation, data validation, bulk property updates, report generation, spec/catalog creation, and drawing publishing.
- Integrate Plant 3D data with external systems (ERP, PLM, Excel, SQL databases, document management).
- Write scripts and utilities in C#, VB.NET, AutoLISP, or Python as appropriate.
- Maintain source control, release versions, and documentation for internal tools.
- Troubleshoot API behavior across Plant 3D versions and manage upgrades/migrations.
Standards, Quality & Support
- Own and enforce Plant 3D project standards and best practices across the team.
- Train and mentor designers on Plant 3D workflows and internal tools.
- Act as technical point of contact for Plant 3D issues, performance tuning, and database health.
Required Qualifications
- Diploma / Bachelor's degree in Mechanical, Chemical, Piping, or a related engineering discipline.
- 35 years of hands-on experience with AutoCAD Plant 3D and AutoCAD P&ID;, including at least one OEM project (skid-mounted systems, packaged equipment, process modules) and exposure to EPC, consultancy, or plant-owner environments.
- Proven experience developing plugins/add-ins for AutoCAD Plant 3D using the .NET API (C# preferred).
- Strong knowledge of the AutoCAD .NET API / ObjectARX and the Plant 3D data model (project database structure, PnPDatabase, PnPRow, PnPTable).
- Experience creating and modifying specs and catalogs using Spec Editor and Catalog Builder.
- Solid understanding of piping fundamentals: P&ID; interpretation, routing, supports, valves, isometric conventions, and codes such as ASME B31.3 / B31.1.
- Familiarity with SQL (SQLite / SQL Server) for querying and maintaining Plant 3D project data.
- Proficiency with Visual Studio, Git, and general software development practices.
Preferred
- Autodesk Vault, BIM 360 / ACC, or Navisworks for coordination and review.
- Plant 3D Collaboration (cloud projects) and Autodesk Platform Services (APS) APIs.
- Exposure to other plant design tools (AVEVA E3D, SmartPlant 3D, CADWorx, OpenPlant) or Inventor/Revit interoperability.
- WPF / WinForms UI development for plugin dialogs.
- Autodesk Certified Professional credential in AutoCAD or Plant 3D.
- Experience across oil & gas, chemicals, pharma, water treatment, power, or food & beverage.
Soft Skills
- Problem-solving mindset — able to turn a designer's pain point into a working tool.
- Clear written and verbal communication; comfortable documenting and presenting work.
- Self-driven, able to balance project deadlines with tool development.
- Collaborative with engineers, designers, and IT.
