Purpose/Objective The Lead Mechanical Engineering will be responsible for end-to-end mechanical engineering of Nuclear Island, Turbine Island, and critical Balance of Plant (BOP) systems for nuclear power projects.
The role will provide technical leadership for design review, package engineering, procurement support, construction engineering, commissioning readiness, and lifecycle reliability of mechanical systems.
The position will act as the primary mechanical engineering focal point between reactor technology suppliers, Owner's Engineers, EPC contractors, regulators, and internal stakeholders while supporting the Head – Nuclear Engineering in establishing Design Authority capability, engineering excellence, and internal nuclear competency.
The role aligns with AAEL's objective of developing robust in-house engineering capabilities and ensuring secure, timely, and cost-effective delivery of nuclear projects.

Mechanical Engineering Delivery - Lead mechanical engineering activities across all stages from concept development through commissioning and operational handover.
- Develop and manage mechanical engineering execution plans aligned with project schedules and regulatory milestones.
- Ensure timely issuance, review, and approval of mechanical engineering deliverables.
- Coordinate engineering activities among technology suppliers, Owner's Engineers, EPC contractors, and consultants.
- Drive resolution of engineering issues impacting procurement, construction, commissioning, or licensing activities. Nuclear Island Mechanical Systems - Lead design review and engineering integration for:
- Reactor Island Systems - Reactor Coolant System - Steam Generators - Pressurizer Systems - Primary Heat Transport System - Emergency Core Cooling System - Residual Heat Removal System - Safety Injection Systems - Reactor Auxiliary Systems - Fuel Handling Systems - Radioactive Waste Processing Systems - Containment Mechanical Systems - Nuclear HVAC Systems - Turbine Island Systems- Steam Turbine Generator Package - Condenser Systems - Moisture Separator Reheaters - Feedwater Systems - Condensate Systems - Turbine Auxiliaries - Balance of Plant (BOP) Mechanical Systems- Provide engineering oversight for:
- Cooling Water Systems - Circulating Water System - Intake and Outfall Systems - Service Water Systems - Fire Protection Systems - Compressed Air Systems - Water Treatment Systems - Chilled Water Systems - Hydrogen and Nitrogen Systems - Diesel Generator Mechanical Systems - Lifting and Material Handling Equipment - Package Engineering & Procurement Support - Develop technical specifications for major mechanical equipment and systems.
- Support tender preparation, technical bid evaluation, and vendor selection.
- Review vendor drawings, calculations, manufacturing documentation, and quality plans.
- Define technical acceptance criteria, inspection requirements, and performance guarantees.
- Support procurement of long-lead nuclear equipment and critical mechanical packages.
1. Design Integration &
• Interface Management - Manage interfaces between mechanical, civil, electrical, I&C;, and safety disciplines.
- Coordinate integration between reactor vendor designs and plant-specific engineering.
- Ensure consistency of design basis across all mechanical systems.
- Lead multidisciplinary design review workshops and interface meetings.
- Resolve engineering deviations and technical conflicts.
1. Regulatory Compliance &
• Nuclear Safety - Ensure compliance with:
- AERB Codes and Guides - IAEA Standards - ASME Section III - RCC-M Code - ISO Standards - Applicable Indian Standards - Support preparation of licensing and regulatory submissions.
- Participate in regulator interactions and technical reviews.
- Ensure nuclear safety requirements are incorporated into design and equipment specifications.
- Support safety classification and seismic qualification activities.

• Commissioning Support - Provide technical support during equipment installation and erection.
- Resolve site engineering queries and construction-related issues.
- Review non-conformance reports, deviations, and field change requests.
- Support pre-commissioning and commissioning activities.
- Review testing procedures, system turnover packages,
and performance test requirements.
- Ensure timely closure of commissioning punch points.
1. Design Authority &
• Configuration Management - Support implementation of Design Authority processes for mechanical systems.
- Maintain configuration control of safety-related systems and equipment.
- Review engineering changes affecting safety, operability, reliability, or licensing.
- Ensure traceability of design modifications throughout project lifecycle.
- Maintain design basis documentation and engineering records.
1. Reliability, Lifecycle &
• Operational Engineering - Support development of equipment reliability and lifecycle management programs.
- Participate in ageing management and equipment health monitoring strategies.
- Develop maintenance philosophies and reliability-centered maintenance frameworks.
- Incorporate operational feedback and global best practices into design improvements.
- Support future operational engineering and plant modification programs.
1. Capability Building &
• Engineering Excellence - Develop internal expertise in nuclear mechanical engineering.
- Mentor engineers and establish competency development programs.
- Develop standard specifications, engineering procedures, and review checklists.
- Promote adoption of digital engineering tools, digital twins, predictive maintenance, and advanced analytics.
- Capture lessons learned from global nuclear projects and operating experience.

Qualifications and Experience
Qualifications & Experience - 15+ years of experience in nuclear power plant project design and construction.
- Minimum 8–10 years in mechanical lead/project engineering roles in nuclear power plant construction. Prior exposure to NSSS systems, turbine island engineering, nuclear projects, reactor vendors, or Owner's Engineers will be highly preferred.
The role directly supports the Head – Nuclear Engineering in delivering end-to-end engineering, - design integration, Design Authority functions, regulatory compliance, and engineering capability development for AAEL's nuclear power program.
