Principal System Architect – Magnetics & Power Conversion

About the Role

L&T; Semiconductor Technologies is looking for an experienced and highly motivated Principal System Architect – Magnetics & Power Conversion to join our Power BU.

The successful candidate will provide technical leadership in the development of advanced AC-DC and DC-DC power-conversion architectures, with particular focus on high-frequency magnetics, power density, efficiency and system-level optimization for Data Center and Industrial applications.

This is a senior technical individual-contributor role for a power-electronics expert who understands that next-generation power conversion requires simultaneous optimization of semiconductor devices, converter topology, magnetics, control, packaging and thermal design.

The role combines system architecture, magnetics expertise, semiconductor product definition, modeling, hardware development and customer technical engagement.

Key Responsibilities

1. Power Conversion System Architecture

- Define and develop advanced AC-DC and DC-DC power-conversion architectures, including isolated and non-isolated solutions.
- Evaluate and select converter topologies based on efficiency, power density, switching frequency, thermal performance, reliability and system cost.
- Lead system-level architecture and design trade-offs across power semiconductor devices, magnetics, control, passive components, packaging, PCB/layout and thermal management.
- Drive architecture development from concept and simulation through prototype and hardware validation.
- Conduct feasibility studies and architecture reviews for new technologies and product opportunities.

2. Magnetics Architecture & Design

- Provide deep technical expertise and leadership for high-frequency power magnetics, including transformers, inductors, coupled inductors, planar magnetics and integrated magnetics.
- Own or guide magnetic component design covering core material and geometry selection, winding architecture, turns ratio, inductance definition, leakage and magnetizing inductance.
- Optimize core losses, copper and AC winding losses, skin and proximity effects, parasitic capacitance, isolation, thermal performance and saturation behavior.
- Develop magnetics solutions optimized for high-frequency, high-efficiency and high-power-density power conversion.

3. Magnetics & Semiconductor Co-Optimization

- Drive co-optimization of power semiconductors and magnetics at the converter/system level.
- Understand the interaction between semiconductor switching characteristics and magnetic component design.
- Evaluate trade-offs among switching frequency, semiconductor losses, magnetic losses, passive component size, EMI, thermal performance, converter efficiency and power density.
- Define system requirements that enable optimum utilization of Silicon, SiC and GaN technologies.
- Identify opportunities where advanced magnetics and power integration can create meaningful system-level differentiation.

4. Advanced Power Conversion

Provide strong technical expertise across relevant converter architectures such as:

- Power Factor Correction (PFC)
- Resonant converters including LLC / CLLC
- Half-Bridge and Full-Bridge converters
- Phase-Shifted Full Bridge and Dual Active Bridge
- Multiphase and bidirectional converters
- High-frequency isolated conversion and non-isolated DC-DC conversion

Evaluate emerging architectures and determine their applicability to future Data Center and Industrial power systems.





5. Modeling, Simulation & Hardware Development

- Develop and guide detailed system-level and magnetic-component models.
- Perform converter loss analysis, magnetic loss modeling, efficiency optimization, switching analysis, thermal analysis and control-loop analysis.
- Develop or guide development of proof-of-concept and reference hardware.
- Correlate analytical and simulation results with laboratory measurements and drive design optimization.
- Establish design methodologies and guidelines for high-frequency power conversion and magnetics.
- Experience with tools such as PLECS, SPICE, MATLAB/Simulink and FEM-based magnetic simulation tools is highly desirable.

6. Semiconductor Product Definition

- Translate system and magnetics requirements into actionable semiconductor product requirements.
- Collaborate closely with Product Management, IC Design, Power Device, Packaging and Application Engineering teams.
- Provide system-level input for power semiconductor devices, power management ICs, controllers, gate drivers, integrated power stages, power modules and advanced packaging technologies.
- Ensure semiconductor product definitions are driven by clear system architecture and end-application requirements.

7. Data Center & Industrial Applications

Apply power-conversion and magnetics expertise to demanding applications including Data Center and computing infrastructure, server power systems, high-density power supplies, industrial power supplies, telecom power, factory automation, robotics, motor drives, UPS and energy infrastructure.

Understand application-level requirements and identify opportunities for improvements in efficiency, power density, thermal performance, reliability and total system cost.

8. Technology Innovation

- Track emerging technologies in power conversion, magnetics, semiconductor devices, magnetic materials and packaging.
- Identify current approaches to improve power density and converter performance.
- Explore advanced magnetics and power-integration concepts.
- Generate differentiated technical concepts and contribute to intellectual property and patents.
- Collaborate with external technology partners, universities, research institutes and suppliers.
- Evaluate new magnetic materials, manufacturing technologies and component architectures.

9. Customer & Ecosystem Engagement

- Act as a senior technical interface with strategic customers and ecosystem partners.
- Engage with customer System Architects and senior R&D; engineers.
- Understand current and future system-level challenges and translate them into system and semiconductor product requirements.
- Lead technical workshops and architecture discussions.
- Work with magnetics suppliers and technology partners to develop optimized solutions for advanced power-conversion platforms.

10. Technical Leadership & Mentoring

- Serve as a technical authority in magnetics and power conversion within the Power BU.
- Mentor System Architects and power-electronics engineers.
- Lead architecture and design reviews.
- Develop design methodologies and engineering best practices.
- Support technical assessment and development of engineering talent.




- Help strengthen organizational competency in high-frequency power conversion and magnetics.

Required Skills:

Education

- MS / M.Tech / PhD in Electrical Engineering, Power Electronics or a related discipline.
- Advanced specialization in Power Electronics, Magnetics, High-Frequency Power Conversion or related areas is highly desirable.

Experience

- Typically 12–18+ years of relevant industry experience in Power Electronics, Power Conversion and/or Magnetics.
- Demonstrated experience designing AC-DC and DC-DC power converters.
- Strong hands-on experience in high-frequency magnetic component design.
- Experience taking power-conversion designs from concept through simulation, prototype, characterization and productization.
- Strong understanding of isolated and non-isolated power conversion.
- Experience working in multidisciplinary environments involving semiconductor devices, control, magnetics, packaging and thermal design.

Experience with GaN and/or SiC-based power-conversion systems is highly desirable.

Preferred Background

Experience in one or more of the following areas would be particularly valuable: Data Center Power, Server Power, High-Density Power Supplies, Industrial Power, Telecom Power, Advanced Magnetics, Wide-Bandgap Power Conversion and Semiconductor Applications.

Experience working with magnetic component suppliers, magnetic materials, custom magnetics or advanced power integration would be an advantage.
