1. Job Purpose
Lead safe, reliable and SLA-compliant operation of the 30 MW data center during the assigned shift. The role is accountable for real-time monitoring, maintenance coordination, incident command, change control, customer support and shift-team performance across electrical, mechanical, fire-life-safety, security and automation systems. The Shift Lead acts as the single operational owner on duty and ensures disciplined execution of SOPs, MOPs and EOPs, accurate escalation, and complete shift handover.
2. Role Scope and Critical Infrastructure
- Electrical: utility/GIS interface, transformers, MV/LT switchgear, bus ducts, DG systems, UPS, batteries, STS/ATS, PDUs/RPPs, earthing and lightning protection.
- Mechanical: chillers, cooling towers or heat-rejection systems, pumps, PAHU/AHU/CRAH units, chilled-water network, valves, VFDs, ventilation, plumbing and water-treatment systems.
- High-density cooling, where deployed: CDUs, primary and technology-cooling loops, liquid-cooling alarms, leak detection, pressure, flow and temperature monitoring.
- Fire and life safety: FAS, VESDA, clean-agent/fire-suppression systems, hydrant/sprinkler systems, emergency exits and emergency response equipment.
- Monitoring and security: BMS, EPMS, DCIM, WLD, CCTV, access control, public-address and related command-center systems.
- Customer environments: white-space power and cooling availability, rack power provisioning, remote-hands coordination and approved customer activity support.
3. Key Accountabilities
A. Shift Command and 24x7 Monitoring
- Assume formal charge of the facility at shift start, review open risks, alarms, impairments, ongoing work, capacity constraints and customer commitments.
- Maintain continuous command-center oversight of BMS, EPMS, DCIM, FAS, VESDA, WLD, CCTV and access-control alarms; ensure each alarm is acknowledged, validated, recorded and closed or escalated.
- Deploy shift engineers and technicians based on risk, permit status, workload and competency; maintain minimum required coverage across critical areas.
- Conduct scheduled facility rounds and verify equipment health, operating parameters, redundancy status, housekeeping, safety conditions and abnormal indications.
- Maintain a clear operating picture of available capacity, redundancy, equipment under maintenance, bypass conditions and temporarily impaired protection.
B. Incident, Emergency and Escalation Management
- Act as first incident commander for alarms, equipment trips, utility disturbances, cooling excursions, leaks, fire alarms, security events and customer-impacting conditions.
- Execute the approved EOP, stabilize the facility, protect people and assets, preserve redundancy, and escalate through the defined communication matrix.
- Open and manage incident tickets, maintain a timestamped event log, coordinate technical response, provide factual updates and drive restoration within agreed SLA/TAT.
- Ensure preservation of evidence, event logs, trends and witness inputs; support preliminary incident reports and detailed RCA/corrective-action closure.
- Initiate emergency services, OEM or management support in accordance with site procedures and authority limits.
C. Maintenance and Change Control
- Plan and control preventive, predictive,
condition-based and breakdown maintenance during the shift without compromising safety, redundancy or customer service.
- Verify approved work order, risk assessment, method statement, permit-to-work, isolation/LOTO, rollback plan, test instruments, spares and competent manpower before work begins.
- Lead pre-work briefing and post-work validation; confirm system normalization, alarm clearance, removal of temporary arrangements and closure of permits and change records.
- Coordinate OEMs and vendors, verify attendance and workmanship, track observations, and escalate overdue maintenance, defects and repeat failures.
- Raise and manage change requests for site work, configuration updates, maintenance and commissioning; stop work when controls are inadequate or conditions deviate from approval.
D. Capacity, Efficiency and Customer Delivery
- Monitor electrical and cooling loading, operating margins and redundancy; escalate threshold breaches and emerging capacity risks.
- Track shift-level energy and water performance indicators, including PUE/WUE inputs, abnormal consumption and avoidable simultaneous or unloaded operation.
- Coordinate approved power provisioning, energization, commissioning, capacity augmentation and customer delivery activities.
- Manage customer calls, service requests, incident communications and remote-hands support within approved scope and access controls.
- Protect customer confidentiality and ensure activities in white space are executed with authorization, escort, ESD controls and accurate closure records.
E. Safety, Compliance and Audit Readiness
- Enforce electrical, mechanical, work-at-height, hot-work, confined-space, lifting and chemical-safety controls applicable to activities during the shift.
- Ensure permits, LOTO, PPE, toolbox talks, competency checks and emergency arrangements are in place; exercise stop-work authority for unsafe conditions.
- Maintain readiness for statutory, customer and management audits; retain complete logs, checklists, test records, permits and maintenance evidence.
- Follow site requirements for ISO management systems, setting, health and safety, security and applicable statutory interfaces; immediately report non-compliance.
- Conduct or participate in emergency drills, post-drill reviews and action closure.
F. Team, Vendor and Shift Handover
- Brief, coach and assess shift personnel on assigned tasks, site procedures, emergency response and equipment operation.
- Coordinate effectively with security, safety, IT/network, projects, customer delivery, facility management, OEMs and service partners.
- Prepare daily, weekly and monthly operating inputs, including alarms, incidents, maintenance, capacity, efficiency, safety, risks, vendor performance and pending actions.
- Complete a structured face-to-face handover covering open incidents, active permits, disabled alarms/interlocks, equipment out of service, temporary configurations, pending changes,
customer commitments and escalation status.
- Ensure no critical action is transferred without named ownership, due time and acknowledgement by the incoming Shift Lead.

5. Decision Rights and Escalation
- Stop any activity that presents an unacceptable safety, reliability, compliance or customer-impact risk.
- Initiate approved EOPs and emergency escalation without delay when trigger conditions are met.
- Defer or suspend maintenance/change work if redundancy, staffing, permits, tools, spares, weather, utility condition or facility state is unsuitable.
- Call OEM/vendor support and internal escalation teams within the approved authority and contact matrix.
- Escalate immediately when operating limits, service risk or recovery time exceed site-defined thresholds; do not normalize or conceal alarms without authorization.
6. Qualifications and Experience
Education
Diploma / BE / B.Tech in Electrical, Mechanical or equivalent engineering discipline.
Experience
6-10 years of relevant critical-facility or data center operations and maintenance experience, including at least 2 years in shift coordination or team-lead responsibility.
Technical Exposure
Hands-on troubleshooting and maintenance exposure across UPS, batteries, DG, transformers, switchgear, PDU, chillers, PAHU/AHU/CRAH, pumps, fire systems and controls.
Systems Exposure
Working knowledge of BMS, EPMS, DCIM, FAS, VESDA, WLD, CCTV and access-control platforms.
Process Exposure
Experience with incident, problem, change, permit-to-work, LOTO, preventive maintenance, vendor management, customer calls and remote-hands services.
Preferred Certifications
CDCP/CDCS or equivalent data center certification; electrical authorization, safety, first-aid/fire-fighting or OEM training relevant to assigned duties.
Communication
Clear verbal and written communication, disciplined documentation, concise escalation and confident coordination with customers and vendors.
