Job Title: Cassandra DBA
Location: Remote
Job Type: Full Time
Note - Candidate needs to work in UK Shift Time.
Job Description -
Responsibilities
Lead and support Oracle-to-Apache Cassandra data migration activities, ensuring data integrity, consistency, and minimal disruption to business services.
Own the Cassandra data-layer architecture and design supporting high-volume, real-time payment transaction processing.
Take end-to-end responsibility for keyspace design, data modelling, Cassandra cluster implementation, and performance optimisation.
Work closely with project, infrastructure, security, and application teams to ensure the Cassandra platform satisfies availability, resilience, encryption, and access-control requirements.
Develop comprehensive operational runbooks, support procedures, and technical documentation, and deliver knowledge transfer to internal teams prior to service handover.
Design, deploy, configure, and maintain Apache Cassandra clusters, including replication, keyspace configuration, partitioning, and topology strategies.
Create and optimise Cassandra data models based on application query requirements, including denormalisation, partition-key selection, hotspot prevention, and management of wide partitions.
Perform Cassandra performance tuning, covering compaction configuration, consistency levels, read/write path optimisation, JVM configuration, and garbage-collection tuning.
Manage day-to-day Cassandra operations, including node provisioning, decommissioning, cluster expansion, repairs, backups, restoration, and disaster-recovery activities.
Implement and maintain cluster monitoring and observability, using platforms such as Prometheus, Grafana, OpsCenter, or equivalent monitoring solutions.
Provide technical guidance on CQL development, query optimisation, and recommended application access patterns.
Partner with infrastructure and security teams to implement platform hardening, encryption in transit and at rest, authentication, authorisation,
and RBAC controls.
Maintain detailed technical documentation covering data models, architecture, operational runbooks, troubleshooting procedures, and support processes.
Knowledge & Experience
Degree or equivalent qualification in Computer Science, Engineering, Business Administration, or a related discipline.
4–9 years of professional experience in NoSQL database engineering, with substantial hands-on production experience with Apache Cassandra.
Robust expertise in Cassandra keyspace and table design, query-driven data modelling, replication strategies, partitioning, and consistency configuration.
Advanced understanding of CQL and Cassandra architecture/internals, including SSTables, memtables, commit logs, compaction, gossip, and tombstone management.
Practical experience operating Cassandra clusters, including node additions and removals, decommissioning, repairs, backup and restore, and disaster-recovery procedures.
Experience in capacity planning, cluster sizing, performance assessment, and managing Cassandra across multiple environments or deployments.
Strong Linux administration and automation/scripting capabilities, preferably using Bash and/or Python.
Experience within regulated industries or financial-services environments, with a good understanding of security controls, encryption, authentication, authorisation, and RBAC.
Familiarity with messaging and integration technologies, such as IBM MQ/IIB or Kafka, would be advantageous.
Knowledge of Oracle PL/SQL would be beneficial but is not essential.
DataStax/Cassandra certification and experience with cloud-based Cassandra services such as AWS Keyspaces or Azure-managed Cassandra offerings would be desirable.
Experience working within Agile delivery environments, including participation in ceremonies and collaboration across technical and business functions.
Demonstrable ability to take end-to-end ownership of database services, troubleshoot complex production issues, and coordinate effectively with stakeholders across teams and geographical locations.
