Optics & Display Engineer – XR Headset

Company: US-Based Technology Company

Work Location: Fun Republic Area, Andheri West, Mumbai

Employment Type: Full time | On-Site

Experience: Freshers Welcome

Education: B.E./B.Tech/M.Sc./M.Tech in Optics, Photonics, Applied Physics, Electronics, ECE, Instrumentation or related discipline

About the Opportunity

A US-based technology company is hiring engineers in Mumbai to develop a next-generation immersive 180° entertainment headset.

We are looking for an Optics & Display Engineer who will help create the visual experience inside the headset.

This role sits at the intersection of optics, displays, electronics, human vision and XR technology. You will work with high-resolution displays, pancake lenses and optical modules to achieve a sharp, comfortable and cinema-quality immersive viewing experience.

Fresh graduates with strong optics, photonics, imaging, display or physics projects are encouraged to apply.

What You Will Work On

You will help develop the visual system from:

Display Selection → Lens Selection → Optical Integration → Alignment → Calibration → Visual Testing → Production Validation

Key Responsibilities

Display Technology

Research and evaluate high-resolution display technologies for XR headsets.

Work with Micro-OLED, OLED and fast LCD technologies.

Compare display modules based on:Resolution

Pixel density

Brightness

Contrast

Refresh rate

Color performance

Latency

Power consumption

Thermal performance

Work with display suppliers and evaluate engineering samples.

Support display integration with the electronics team.

XR Optics

Evaluate and integrate optical systems including:

Pancake lenses Aspheric lenses Fresnel systems Other emerging XR optics

You will help determine the right optical architecture for long-duration immersive entertainment.

You will work on:

Field of View (FOV)

Pixels Per Degree (PPD)

Eye relief

Exit pupil

IPD

Focus

Lens-to-display distance

Optical distortion

Chromatic aberration

Edge-to-edge clarity

Glare and reflections

Visual comfort

180° Immersive Cinema Optimization

SilverScreenX is being developed specifically around immersive entertainment.

You will work closely with the XR software engineer to optimize the headset for:

Stereoscopic 180° movies

Immersive video

Sports

Concerts

Live entertainment

Long-duration viewing

The goal is not simply to achieve impressive specifications on paper. The objective is to make content look sharp, natural and comfortable for extended viewing periods.

Optical Alignment

Small errors in display/lens positioning can significantly affect XR image quality.

You will help define:

Lens alignment

Display alignment

Optical-axis alignment

Lens/display spacing

IPD geometry

Mechanical tolerances

Calibration procedures

You will work closely with the Mechanical Engineer to ensure the physical headset maintains these tolerances during manufacturing.

Optical Calibration

You will help develop a repeatable calibration process for every headset.

For example:

Headset → Display Test Pattern → Camera/Measurement → Distortion Analysis → Calibration → Verification → PASS/FAIL

As production grows, this process should become increasingly automated.

Visual Quality Testing

You will investigate issues such as:

Blur

Distortion

Color mismatch

Uneven brightness

Dead/stuck pixels

Glare

Ghosting

Chromatic aberration

Poor edge clarity

Incorrect focus

Eye strain

Stereo mismatch

You will help establish measurable acceptance criteria for production devices.

Optical Cleanliness

Because lenses and displays are extremely sensitive to contamination, you will help define:

Optical cleaning procedures

Dust-control requirements

Display handling procedures

Lens handling procedures

Assembly cleanliness standards

Inspection processes

For production,

you will work with the Manufacturing Engineer to create a controlled optical assembly/calibration area.

Supplier & Vendor Evaluation

You will interact with display and optics suppliers to:

Request samples

Compare optical modules

Review specifications

Test reference designs

Evaluate quality consistency

Define acceptable tolerances

Compare cost and MOQ

Identify alternative suppliers

Resolve quality problems

You will help the company decide whether to use a ready-made optical module, semi-custom module or eventually a more customized optical system.

Prototype Development

During early development, you will work hands-on with:

Display modules

Lens assemblies

XR reference headsets

Optical prototypes

Mechanical test fixtures

Calibration equipment

You will participate directly in prototype builds rather than working only on theoretical simulations.

Tools & Technical Knowledge

Exposure to any of the following is valuable:

Geometric optics

Physical optics

Imaging systems

Display technology

Photometry

Color science

Optical measurement

Image processing

MATLAB

Python

Zemax / OpticStudio

Code V or similar optical-design software

Python/MATLAB skills are particularly useful for analyzing calibration and measurement data.

Freshers Are Welcome

Professional XR experience is not mandatory.

We are particularly interested in candidates with academic or personal projects involving:

Optics Photonics Lasers Imaging Cameras Displays Computer Vision AR/VR Optical Instruments Image Processing Color Science

Candidates should be prepared to discuss their project work and explain the underlying physics and engineering.

What We Look For

We want someone who:

Has strong fundamentals in optics/physics.

Is obsessed with visual quality and details.

Enjoys experimental work.

Can measure rather than simply judge by eye.

Is comfortable working with hardware prototypes.

Can analyze data and troubleshoot problems.

Wants to learn XR display technology.

Can work closely with mechanical, electronics and software engineers.

Work Location: In person
