Position Details
Designation: Assistant Manager – SMS TSD
Function: Technical Services Division (TSD)
Department: Steel Melting Shop (SMS)
Location: Angul, Odisha
Reporting To: Manager/DM – SMS TSD
Role Purpose
To support the technical and metallurgical improvement activities of the Steel Melting Shop (SMS) by monitoring process performance, analysing metallurgical parameters, identifying process and quality deviations, and driving corrective and preventive actions for improved process stability, steel quality, productivity and cost efficiency.
Key Responsibilities
1. SMS Process & Technical Monitoring
- Monitor and analyse critical SMS process parameters impacting steel quality, productivity and process stability.
- Evaluate heat-wise process performance against defined operating and metallurgical norms.
- Identify process deviations and coordinate with Operations for corrective action.
- Analyse variations in steelmaking practices and recommend improvements.
- Support standardisation of best operating practices across heats and shifts.
2. Metallurgical Process Control
- Monitor heat chemistry, temperature, slag parameters, alloy additions and other critical metallurgical parameters.
- Analyse heat-wise chemistry trends and support optimisation of alloy/additive consumption.
- Coordinate with SMS Operations, Ladle Furnace and Continuous Casting teams for process corrections.
- Investigate issues related to chemistry deviations, temperature variations, inclusions and other metallurgical abnormalities.
- Support optimisation of steelmaking practices for different steel grades.
3. Quality Assurance & Control
- Monitor SMS quality performance and ensure adherence to grade-specific requirements.
- Analyse rejected, downgraded and off-grade heats and identify major causes.
- Coordinate with Quality Assurance and downstream units for resolution of quality issues.
- Support investigation of customer and downstream quality complaints related to steelmaking.
- Ensure effective implementation and closure of corrective and preventive actions.
4. Process Data Analysis
- Analyse heat-wise production, quality and metallurgical data to identify trends and process abnormalities.
- Develop and maintain MIS covering key SMS technical and quality parameters.
- Track KPIs such as yield, tap-to-tap time, chemistry adherence, alloy consumption, temperature adherence and rejection/downgrade.
- Use statistical and data-driven approaches to identify improvement opportunities.

Root Cause Analysis & Improvement
- Lead/support Root Cause Analysis (RCA) for recurring process and quality issues.
- Identify technical causes of process deviations and recommend sustainable corrective actions.
- Monitor effectiveness of implemented corrective and preventive measures.
- Drive initiatives for reduction of quality losses, process variation and avoidable consumption.
- Participate in cross-functional improvement projects with Operations, Quality, Maintenance and downstream mills.
6. SMS Process Optimisation
- Support optimisation of steelmaking practices for improved productivity and yield.
- Identify opportunities for reduction in:
- Alloy and additive consumption
- Rejected/downgraded heats
- Reblows and process abnormalities
- Metallic losses
- Temperature losses
- Quality-related production losses
- Support trials for current process practices, materials and technologies and evaluate results.
7. Continuous Casting & Downstream Coordination
- Coordinate with Continuous Casting and Rolling Mill teams to understand the impact of SMS process parameters on downstream quality.
- Investigate defects originating from steelmaking and support corrective actions.
- Provide SMS technical inputs for improving downstream process performance.
- Track the impact of SMS interventions on final product quality.
8. SOPs, Standards & Technical Documentation
- Develop, review and standardise SMS technical procedures, SOPs, work instructions and process control plans.
- Ensure adherence to defined metallurgical and operating standards.
- Document process trials, technical investigations, RCA findings and improvement initiatives.
- Support internal audits and quality management system requirements.
9. Team & Cross-functional Coordination
- Coordinate with SMS Operations, Quality, Maintenance, R&D; and other TSD teams for technical problem-solving.
- Guide engineers and technical personnel in process analysis and troubleshooting.
- Conduct technical discussions and knowledge-sharing sessions with operating teams.
- Support implementation of best practices across shifts.

Education
- B.E./B.Tech in Metallurgical & Materials Engineering / Metallurgy / Materials Science.
- M.Tech/M.E. in Metallurgy/Materials Science will be an added advantage.
Experience
- 6–10 years of relevant experience in SMS, Steelmaking, Metallurgy, Process Quality or Technical Services, preferably in an integrated steel plant.
- Hands-on experience in LD/BOF steelmaking, secondary metallurgy, Ladle Furnace and Continuous Casting is preferred.
- Experience in process optimisation, quality control, metallurgical data analysis and RCA will be desirable.

The ideal candidate should be a metallurgy/steelmaking professional with strong hands-on exposure to SMS technical services, capable of analysing process and quality data, diagnosing metallurgical deviations and working closely with Operations to implement sustainable improvements.
The candidate should demonstrate the ability to translate metallurgical analysis into practical improvements in quality, yield, productivity and cost, while effectively coordinating with Operations, Quality and downstream process teams.
