AE – SMS TSD (Quality)

Position Details

Designation: Assistant Engineer – SMS TSD (Quality)

Function: Technical Services Division (TSD) – Quality

Department: Steel Melting Shop (SMS)

Location: Angul, Odisha

Reporting To: DM/Manager – SMS TSD (Quality)

Role Purpose

To support the quality assurance and technical services activities of the Steel Melting Shop (SMS) by monitoring process and product quality, analysing metallurgical and operational parameters, identifying deviations, and supporting corrective and preventive actions to ensure production of steel conforming to specified quality requirements.

Key Responsibilities

1. SMS Process Quality Monitoring

- Monitor critical SMS process parameters affecting steel quality, including steel chemistry, temperature, slag condition, alloy additions and process practices.
- Track process adherence against defined operating and metallurgical standards.
- Identify process deviations and coordinate with Operations for timely corrective action.
- Monitor consistency of steelmaking practices across heats.

2. Heat & Chemistry Control

- Monitor heat-wise chemical composition against grade-specific specifications.
- Coordinate with SMS Operations, Ladle Furnace and other relevant areas for chemistry correction.
- Analyse trends in key elements and identify recurring chemistry deviations.
- Ensure appropriate alloy and additive practices are followed for targeted chemistry and quality requirements.

3. Sampling & Testing

- Coordinate heat-wise sampling and testing activities at relevant stages of steelmaking.
- Ensure samples are representative, properly identified and tested within defined timelines.
- Monitor test results and communicate deviations to concerned stakeholders.
- Maintain accurate records of heat-wise quality and testing data.

4. Quality Analysis & Problem Solving

- Analyse quality deviations, rejections, downgraded heats and customer-related quality concerns attributable to SMS.
- Support Root Cause Analysis (RCA) for metallurgical and process-related quality issues.




- Assist in implementation and monitoring of corrective and preventive actions.
- Identify recurring quality issues and support improvement initiatives.

5. Process & Quality Documentation

- Maintain heat-wise quality records, inspection data, test results and deviation reports.
- Prepare daily/weekly/monthly quality MIS and trend reports.
- Ensure traceability of heats and relevant quality parameters.
- Support preparation and revision of SOPs, work instructions and quality control plans.

6. Coordination with Downstream Processes

- Coordinate with Rolling Mills, Quality Assurance, Metallurgy and other downstream functions to understand the impact of SMS quality on subsequent processing.
- Track quality issues originating from steelmaking and support their resolution.
- Provide relevant SMS quality inputs for downstream process optimisation.

7. Quality Improvement & Continuous Improvement

- Identify opportunities for improving process stability and reducing quality variation.
- Support initiatives aimed at reducing:
- Chemistry deviations
- Rejected/downgraded heats
- Reblows and process abnormalities
- Inclusion-related quality issues
- Quality-related production losses

- Participate in quality improvement projects and data-driven process optimisation.

8. Compliance & Quality Systems

- Ensure adherence to applicable SMS quality standards, SOPs and control plans.
- Support implementation of Quality Management System requirements.
- Participate in internal audits, process audits and compliance activities.
- Ensure proper documentation and closure of identified non-conformities.

- Reduction in recurring SMS quality issues.
- Process parameter adherence.
- Contribution to quality improvement and cost-saving initiatives.

Education

- B.E./B.Tech in Metallurgical & Materials Engineering / Metallurgy / Materials Science.
- Candidates with relevant diploma/degree qualifications and solid SMS quality experience may also be considered, depending on organisational requirements.

Experience

- 3–8 years of relevant experience in SMS Quality, Metallurgy, Process Quality or Technical Services, preferably in an integrated steel plant.
- Hands-on exposure to steelmaking processes such as BOF/LD converter, Ladle Furnace, Continuous Casting and secondary metallurgy will be preferred.
- Experience in heat chemistry control, quality monitoring, sampling/testing and metallurgical data analysis is desirable.

The ideal candidate should have a strong foundation in metallurgy and steelmaking quality, with practical exposure to SMS operations and heat-wise quality monitoring. The candidate should be comfortable working closely with production teams, interpreting metallurgical data, identifying process deviations and supporting timely corrective actions to ensure consistent steel quality.
