Position Purpose The Principal of Primary holds overall responsibility for the leadership, culture, and day-to-day functioning of the Primary section at CIS.
This is both an instructional and a pastoral role: the Principal ensures consistent teaching quality, a well-supported staff team, and disciplined operational leadership across the section. The PYP Coordinator reports directly into this role and leads pedagogical implementation of the IB Primary Years Programme, while the Principal of Primary holds broader responsibility for staffing, parent relationships, and section-wide operations.
Key Responsibilities
Instructional & Pedagogical Leadership
· Ensure consistent, high-quality teaching practice across every Primary classroom, through regular learning walks and reflective, evidence-based feedback.
· Oversee the PYP Coordinator's implementation of inquiry-based, transdisciplinary learning with fidelity across the Primary years.
· Champion innovation in curriculum delivery, ensuring practice does not default to convention where a more effective approach exists.
People Leadership
· Recruit, induct, mentor, and formally evaluate Primary teaching staff.
· Hold regular, structured one-on-one check-ins with staff, functioning as an early channel for surfacing workload or professional concerns.
· Model operational discipline in time management, communication, and follow-through.
· Foster a cooperative staff culture, addressing non-cooperation or fragmented ownership directly and early.
Section Operations & Governance Alignment
· Maintain a disciplined, predictable cadence for policy, timetable, and format changes.
· Implement Management-agreed decisions consistently; raise disagreement through formal channels rather than unilateral reversal.
· Run effective, agenda-driven staff meetings with clear ownership and follow-up.
· Maintain oversight of Primary-section budgets, resources, and compliance requirements.
Parent & Community Partnership
· Serve as the primary point of contact for Primary parents, ensuring consistent, clear communication.
· Lead Primary-specific parent orientation and information sessions.
· Ensure staff understand the family context of their learners, not only the learners themselves.
IB PYP Candidacy & Compliance
· Support progress toward and maintenance of PYP candidacy, ensuring Primary-section practice aligns with IB standards.
· Ensure staff access relevant PYP professional development, in coordination with the PYP Coordinator.
· Represent the Primary section professionally in interactions with the IB.
Qualifications & Experience
· Recognised teaching qualification; postgraduate qualification in education leadership preferred.
· 8–10 years of teaching experience, including demonstrated primary or early-years leadership experience.
· Prior IB World School experience, or strong working knowledge of the IB Primary Years Programme.
· Track record of leading and developing teaching teams, including performance management and PD design.
· Experience working directly with parent communities in a leadership capacity.
