Role & responsibilities

Job Descriptions:

A. Electrical Infrastructure & Operations:

1. Overall responsible for the operation, maintenance and performance of the hospital's complete electrical infrastructure.

2. Supervise and monitor HT/LT substations, transformers, HT/LT panels, switchgear, ACBs, MCCBs, APFC panels, capacitor banks and distribution systems.

3. Ensure uninterrupted power supply to critical hospital areas such as OT, ICU, NICU, PICU, Emergency, Cath Lab, MRI, CT Scan, laboratories and other essential services.

4. Monitor and maintain DG sets, UPS systems, batteries and emergency power systems.

5. Ensure proper functioning of electrical distribution, lighting, emergency lighting, earthing and lightning protection systems.

6. Monitor electrical load, demand, power factor and overall power quality.

7. Review energy consumption and utility parameters on a regular basis.

8. Ensure proper maintenance and availability of electrical logbooks, checklists and equipment history records.

B. Preventive & Breakdown Maintenance:

1. Develop, implement and monitor comprehensive Preventive Maintenance (PM) and Predictive Maintenance (PdM) schedules for all electrical systems.

2. Ensure timely completion of preventive maintenance activities without affecting patient-care operations.

3. Monitor breakdowns, identify root causes and implement corrective and preventive actions.

4. Ensure minimum downtime of critical electrical systems.

5. Establish escalation protocols for major electrical failures and emergencies.

6. Review equipment performance and recommend replacement, upgradation or refurbishment wherever required.

7. Maintain critical spare inventory and ensure availability of essential electrical spares.

C. Critical Hospital Areas:

1. Ensure reliability and electrical safety of power systems serving OTs, ICUs, Emergency, Cath Lab, dialysis, imaging, laboratories and other critical areas.

2. Coordinate with clinical departments before planned shutdowns or maintenance activities.

3. Ensure appropriate backup and redundancy for critical electrical systems.

4. Ensure proper functioning of UPS and emergency power arrangements for life-support and other critical equipment.

5. Coordinate with Biomedical Engineering for electrical requirements of medical equipment.

D. Electrical Safety & Compliance:

1. Ensure compliance with applicable electrical safety regulations, statutory requirements and hospital safety standards.

2. Ensure periodic inspection, testing and certification of electrical installations.

3. Ensure proper earthing, insulation resistance, relay protection and other electrical safety tests.

4. Coordinate statutory inspections and maintain all required certificates, approvals and records.

5. Ensure safe work practices, electrical permit-to-work systems.

6. Conduct regular electrical safety audits and risk assessments.

7. Ensure compliance with fire and life-safety requirements related to electrical installations.

8. Support hospital preparedness for NABH, fire safety and other statutory/quality audits.

E. Fire, Life Safety & Emergency Preparedness:

1. Coordinate with the Fire & Safety team for the reliable functioning of fire alarm, emergency power and other life-safety systems.

2. Ensure electrical systems do not create fire or electrical hazards.

3. Participate in emergency preparedness planning for power failures, electrical fires, DG failure and other utility emergencies.

4. Develop and periodically review emergency response procedures for major electrical breakdowns.

5. Participate in mock drills and emergency preparedness exercises.

F. Energy Management:

1. Monitor and analyse electricity consumption and identify areas for energy conservation.

2. Implement energy-saving initiatives without compromising patient safety or clinical operations.

3. Monitor power factor, maximum demand and load distribution.

4. Identify opportunities for energy-productive equipment and technologies.

5.



Prepare periodic energy consumption reports and highlight abnormal consumption.

6. Coordinate with management for energy-efficiency projects and utility cost reduction.

G. Projects & CAPEX:

1. Lead electrical engineering activities for hospital expansion, renovation, refurbishment and new projects.

2. Review electrical drawings, load calculations, BOQs, specifications and technical proposals.

3. Coordinate with consultants, architects, contractors and project teams.

4. Supervise installation, testing and commissioning of electrical systems.

5. Ensure projects are completed within approved time, cost and quality parameters.

6. Review and approve technical specifications for electrical equipment and systems.

7. Ensure proper handover of completed projects along with as-built drawings, O&M; manuals, test reports and warranties.

H. AMC/CMC & Vendor Management:

1. Manage AMC contracts for electrical equipment and critical utility systems.

2. Evaluate technical capability and performance of contractors and service providers.

3. Monitor SLA compliance, response time, preventive maintenance and breakdown resolution.

4. Review vendor quotations, technical proposals and service reports.

5. Ensure effective coordination with OEMs for critical equipment.

6. Maintain records of AMC contracts, service reports, warranties and equipment history.

I. Team Management:

1. Lead and supervise Electrical Engineers, Shift Engineers, Supervisors, Technicians and outsourced manpower.

2. Prepare manpower deployment and shift schedules to ensure 247 engineering coverage.

3. Allocate responsibilities and monitor individual/team performance.

4. Conduct regular technical training and competency development programs.

5. Ensure employees are trained in electrical safety, emergency procedures and equipment operation.

6. Conduct performance reviews and provide feedback to team members.

7. Promote discipline, teamwork, safety culture and accountability within the Engineering Department.

J. Documentation & Reporting:

1. Maintain comprehensive records of electrical equipment, maintenance activities and breakdown history.

2. Review daily engineering reports and critical equipment status.

3. Prepare monthly reports covering:

4. Electrical consumption

5. Breakdown analysis

6. Preventive maintenance compliance

7. Equipment downtime

8. Power factor and maximum demand

9. Energy-saving initiatives

10. AMC

11. Critical spares

12. CAPEX/project status

13. Analyze recurring breakdowns and prepare corrective action plans.

14. Maintain updated SOPs, preventive maintenance schedules, checklists, equipment manuals, drawings and statutory records.

K. Budget Opex & Capex Preparation and Control:

1. Prepare the annual Opex and Capex budget for Engineering and Facility Management in line with organizational objectives.

2. Monitor actual expenditure against approved budgets and identify deviations.

3. Ensure effective utilization and control of engineering-related operating expenses.

4. Prepare business cases, technical justifications and cost-benefit analysis for major Capex proposals.

5. Monitor project costs, timelines, quality and deliverables for approved Capex projects.

L. Effective Complaint Management & Patient Satisfaction:

1. Establish an effective mechanism for receiving, recording, prioritizing and resolving engineering-related complaints.

2. Ensure timely resolution of complaints related to HVAC, electrical, plumbing, civil, medical gases, lifts, lighting, water supply and other infrastructure services.

3. Monitor complaint TAT and conduct periodic analysis of recurring complaints.

4.



Identify root causes of repeated complaints and implement permanent corrective actions.

5. Coordinate with Clinical, Nursing, Administration and other departments to minimize disruption to patient care.

M. Room Readiness Checks:

1. Ensure systematic room readiness checks before admission, shifting or allocation of patients.

2. Ensure functionality of electrical points, lighting, HVAC, plumbing, bathroom fixtures, nurse call systems, medical gas outlets and other engineering services.

3. Coordinate with Housekeeping, Nursing, Administration and other concerned departments for timely room release.

N. Risk Management – Identification, Assessment & Mitigation:

1. Identify engineering and infrastructure-related risks that may impact patient safety, employee safety, business continuity and hospital operations.

2. Conduct periodic risk assessments covering electrical systems, fire safety, HVAC, medical gases, water systems, lifts, DG systems, HT/LT installations and critical utilities.

3. Develop and implement appropriate risk mitigation and contingency plans.

4. Maintain risk registers and periodically review the status of identified risks.

5. Ensure preventive and corrective measures are implemented within defined timelines.

6. Coordinate emergency preparedness and business continuity measures for critical engineering services.

7. Investigate engineering-related incidents, identify root causes and implement corrective and preventive actions (CAPA).

O. Audits – NABH, Fire & Safety, Electrical, Energy etc.:

1. Ensure preparedness for NABH and other internal/external audits related to Engineering and Facility Management.

2. Ensure compliance with applicable Fire & Safety, Electrical, Energy, Environment and Engineering standards.

3. Conduct periodic internal inspections and mock audits to identify gaps before external assessments.

4. Maintain required records, registers, certificates, inspection reports and compliance documents.

5. Coordinate with auditors and provide required documents, evidence and technical information.

6. Ensure timely closure of audit observations and track CAPA implementation.

7. Monitor compliance with preventive maintenance, testing and calibration schedules.

P. Compliance Management:

1. Ensure compliance with all applicable statutory, regulatory, safety and environmental requirements related to hospital engineering services.

2. Maintain validity and renewal of statutory licenses, certificates, permits and inspection reports.

3. Ensure compliance with requirements related to Fire NOC, electrical inspections, lift licenses, DG sets, medical gases, pollution/environmental requirements and other applicable statutory provisions.

4. Maintain a centralized compliance tracker with responsibility, due date and status.

5. Ensure timely submission of statutory reports and completion of inspections.

6. Coordinate with government authorities, statutory inspectors and external agencies whenever required.

7. Ensure closure of non-compliances within defined timelines.
