Validation Engineer (Smart Electricity Meters)
Role summary: Own end-to-end validation of single-phase and three-phase (WC, CT connected and CT/VT) smart electricity meters across the EVT/DVT/PVT lifecycle , driving hardware validation, functional/system testing, DLMS/COSEM protocol-compliance testing,
and regulatory/certification test support for the Australian market (AS 62052/AS 62053, NMI
M6-1 pattern approval, EMC).
Key responsibilities:
- ∙Plan and execute Engineering Validation Test (EVT), Design Validation Test (DVT) and Production Validation Test (PVT) builds, defining entry/exit criteria, test plans, and gate-review evidence for each phase.
- Develop and maintain test specifications, test cases, and traceability matrices against the product requirement document (PRD) and AS/NZS + IEC requirements.
- Perform hardware validation and end-to-end testing across metrology accuracy, load profile, TOU/ToD, billing, tamper/event logging, last-gasp/first-breath, relay connect/disconnect, and power-quality functions.
- Execute DLMS/COSEM protocol compliance and conformance testing (OBIS object verification, association/security testing, HDLC and TCP/IP profiles) using the DLMS Test Tool, Gurux (GXDLMSDirector / Conformance Test Tool) and/or ASE62056 .
- Coordinate and support regulatory/certification testing: AS 62052.11 type tests, AS 62053 accuracy-class tests, NMI M6-1 pattern approval evidence, and EMC/immunity testing (ESD IEC 61000-4-2, EFT/burst 61000-4-4, surge 61000-4-5, ring-wave 61000-4-12, RF immunity 61000-4-3).
- Build and maintain automated test frameworks and benches (Python with PyTest/Robot Framework; LabVIEW/TestStand reference-source-driven benches), test jigs, and KPI reporting.
- Perform root-cause analysis across meter, communication module and system layers; manage defects in Azure DevOps/Jira; drive continuous test-process improvement.
Required technical skills and tools:
- ∙Proven hands-on smart electricity meter testing/validation/certification experience.
- Metering protocols: DLMS/COSEM (IEC 62056) mandatory; ANSI C12.19 and IS 15959/IS 16444 desirable.
- Test equipment : reference standard/source, power analyzer, oscilloscope, logic analyzer, spectrum analyzer; cellular/RF tools (Wireshark, QXDM/TEMS) where applicable.
- Automation: Python (PyTest/Robot Framework) and/or C#; Linux; CI/CD; Azure DevOps.
- Standards literacy: AS 62052/62053, IEC 62052/62053, NMI M6-1/NITP-14, EMC IEC 61000-4 series.
Qualifications & experience: B.E./B.Tech/M.E./M.Tech in Electronics & Communication / Electrical / Telecommunication; substantial years of experience in smart energy meter testing for a senior/lead profile.
Domain knowledge (Australian market): AS/NZS meter standards, NMI pattern approval and NITP-14 verification regime, Australian accuracy classes (0.5S commercial),
DLMS/COSEM, metrology fundamentals.
Nice to have: DLMS UA exposure; prior NMI/NATA lab interaction; cellular (NB-IoT/LTE-M/Cat-1) test experience; cybersecurity testing of DLMS security suites;
