Staples Promotional Products (SPP) supports a broad portfolio of internal and customer-facing applications used to manage promotional product operations, B2B capabilities, order flow, integrations, reporting, and supporting business processes. The SPP technology team partners with development, QA, infrastructure, security, business support, and product stakeholders to deliver reliable application changes and support the ongoing modernization of delivery practices. This role strengthens the DevOps engineering capability for SPP by adding a hands-on engineer focused on Azure DevOps pipeline ownership, Octopus Deploy support, TFS workflow support, GitHub readiness, Azure cloud enablement, CI/CD standardization, deployment automation, DevSecOps enablement, reusable engineering patterns, and technical delivery maturity across the SPP application portfolio.
We are seeking a talented Senior DevOps Engineer to support the Staples Promotional Products application portfolio. This hands-on engineering role will focus on owning and improving CI/CD capabilities, standardizing Azure DevOps pipeline practices, supporting Octopus Deploy and TFS delivery workflows, preparing for future GitHub adoption, improving build and deployment automation, supporting DevSecOps integration, and building practical Azure cloud delivery capabilities for future modernization. The role is intended for an engineer who can work independently from the GCC location while collaborating with CST-based SPP stakeholders during available overlap hours.
The engineer will not own release governance, release scheduling, release communications, or DevOps management responsibilities; those responsibilities remain with the DevOps Manager. Instead, this role provides the engineering execution layer for pipeline reliability, deployment automation, source control modernization, and DevOps platform maturity.
Duties & Responsibilities:
· Build, maintain, troubleshoot, and improve CI/CD pipelines, with emphasis on Azure DevOps pipeline ownership, reusable templates, consistent YAML patterns, and standardized engineering practices across SPP applications.
· Support and improve Octopus Deploy projects, deployment channels, deployment variables, package promotion patterns,
release pipeline integrations, and deployment automation reliability.
· Support legacy TFS workflows where still required, including build/release definitions, source control integration, artifact feeds, work item linkage, and migration-readiness activities.
· Prepare SPP for future GitHub adoption by supporting GitHub Enterprise readiness, repository modernization, branching strategy alignment, pull request workflows,
and GitHub Actions evaluation where appropriate.
· Partner with development and infrastructure teams when new pipelines or deployment automation changes are needed,
reducing dependency on application developers for long-term pipeline ownership.
· Create reusable pipeline patterns, build templates, release templates, deployment automation approaches, and technical standards that improve consistency across Azure DevOps, Octopus, TFS, and future GitHub-based workflows.
· Support Azure platform enablement by developing working familiarity with Azure services, Azure resource management,
identity and access concepts, cloud application delivery patterns, and Azure-native automation opportunities.
· Troubleshoot build failures, deployment failures, Octopus package/deployment issues, TFS integration issues, source control integration issues, pipeline agent issues, artifact publishing concerns, and environment-related pipeline blockers.
· Partner with infrastructure teams on pipeline dependencies, deployment automation, permissions, secret management,
service connections, agent pools, Octopus variables, Azure resource access, and environment configuration needs.
· Support DevSecOps enablement by helping integrate security scanning, dependency review, vulnerability follow-up, and compliance checks into CI/CD workflows where appropriate.
· Identify repetitive pipeline, deployment-support, build-validation, and operational engineering tasks that can be automated through scripts, templates, workflow tooling, or Azure-native automation.
· Create and maintain technical documentation for pipeline design, Octopus deployment automation, TFS workflows,
GitHub readiness, Azure DevOps standards, source control expectations, DevSecOps integration, and troubleshooting procedures.
Requirements
Basic Qualifications
· Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, or related field, or equivalent professional experience.
· 5+ years of professional experience in DevOps Engineering, CI/CD Engineering, Platform Engineering, Site Reliability
Engineering, Technical Operations, or related field.
· Hands-on experience creating, maintaining, troubleshooting, and improving CI/CD pipelines.
· Proficiency with Azure DevOps including Pipelines, Repositories, YAML-based automation, build/release automation,
repository integration, and deployment workflow support.
· Experience with Octopus Deploy or comparable enterprise deployment automation platforms.
· Experience working with TFS or legacy Microsoft ALM workflows, including build/release definitions, source control integration, artifact feeds, or migration-support activities.
· Working knowledge of Microsoft Azure services and cloud-based application delivery practices.
· Strong understanding of Git-based source control practices, branching concepts, pull request workflows, and release/deployment integration.
· Strong scripting and automation skills using PowerShell, Python, Shell, YAML, or similar technologies.
· Experience troubleshooting build failures, deployment failures, pipeline agent issues, Octopus deployment issues, artifact publishing concerns, source control issues, and environment-related pipeline blockers.
· Robust problem-solving skills with the ability to address complex pipeline, deployment automation, DevSecOps, source control, Azure, and platform delivery issues.
· Excellent written and verbal communication skills with the ability to explain technical findings to cross-functional stakeholders.
· Proven ability to work independently, manage technical tasks across time zones, produce clear handoff documentation,
and collaborate with GCC and CST-based teams.
Preferred Qualifications
· Experience migrating or modernizing legacy TFS processes to Azure DevOps or GitHub.
· Experience with GitHub Enterprise, GitHub Actions, repository governance, branching strategy modernization, or source control migration initiatives.
· Experience with Azure App Services, Azure Functions, Azure Storage, Azure Key Vault, Azure Monitor, Azure Automation, or related Azure services.
· Experience implementing Infrastructure as Code using Bicep, ARM templates, Terraform, Ansible, or similar technologies.
· Exposure to DevSecOps practices including Checkmarx, SonarQube, dependency scanning, vulnerability remediation tracking, certificate monitoring, or security scan integration.
· Experience creating reusable pipeline templates, Octopus deployment automation patterns, technical standards, or developer enablement documentation.
· Familiarity with Docker, Kubernetes, Helm, ArgoCD, FluxCD, Kustomize, or related container/platform technologies.
· Interest or experience with AI technologies to automate engineering workflows, system management, documentation, and operational analysis.
