Principal Software Engineer – Android
Platform
About the Role
We are looking for a highly experienced Principal Engineer to drive the technical direction,
architecture, performance, and engineering excellence of our Android applications.
This is a hands-on individual contributor role requiring deep Android expertise, strong architectural judgment, analytical thinking, and the ability to influence engineering teams and technical decisions across the organization.
Key Responsibilities
● Own and drive the Android architecture and long-term technical strategy for large-scale consumer applications.
● Design scalable, maintainable, and highly performant solutions across application architecture, networking, modularization, and platform capabilities.
● Work hands-on with complex Android codebases and lead modernization of legacy
Java and Kotlin systems.
● Drive adoption of modern Android technologies, particularly Kotlin, Coroutines,
Jetpack Compose, and modern Android architecture patterns.
● Lead performance engineering using production data, telemetry, Android Vitals,
crash/ANR metrics, and other engineering signals.
● Design and optimize applications consuming high-volume REST APIs, with emphasis on latency, caching, concurrency, reliability, and efficient data handling.
● Own technical aspects of the Google Play ecosystem, including publishing, release management, Play Store listings, and monitoring Android Vitals.
● Define and drive automated testing strategies covering unit, Android/instrumentation,
integration, and black-box testing.
● Identify technical risks and drive initiatives to improve engineering quality, reliability,
maintainability, and developer productivity.
● Mentor senior engineers and provide technical leadership through architecture reviews,
design discussions, and engineering standards.
● Collaborate with product, backend, design, and other engineering teams to deliver robust end-to-end solutions.
Required Qualifications
● 9+ years of software engineering experience, with significant depth in Android development.
● Expert-level Android expertise with strong understanding of the Android platform.
● Expert-level Kotlin skills, including Coroutines, Flow, and structured concurrency.
● Strong hands-on experience with Jetpack Compose — mandatory.
● Proven experience designing and evolving large-scale, multi-module Android applications.
● Strong experience working with codebases containing both legacy Java and modern
Kotlin.
● Robust experience building highly performant applications backed by REST APIs.
● Excellent software architecture and system design skills with demonstrated ability to make sound technical trade-offs.
● Robust analytical and problem-solving abilities, particularly in diagnosing complex production and performance issues.
● Deep understanding of mobile performance optimization, including startup time,
rendering, memory, networking, battery, crashes, and ANRs.
● Hands-on experience with Google Play Console, application publishing, Play Store management, release management, and Android Vitals.
● Strong experience with automated testing, including JUnit, Android/instrumentation testing, integration testing, and black-box testing.
● Strong communication and technical leadership skills, with the ability to influence engineering decisions across teams.
Good to Have
● Experience working on Ads, Payments, and/or Subscriptions. Experience in these domains will be considered highly influential, particularly around monetization platforms, SDK integrations, billing flows, reliability, and performance.
● Experience using AI-assisted tools for technical decision-making, software design,
coding, debugging, testing, and developer productivity.
● Experience with mobile CI/CD and release automation.
● Experience with Android build systems, Gradle optimization, and large-scale dependency management.
● Experience with observability, telemetry, crash analytics, and production diagnostics.
● Experience with iOS / Swift or cross-platform technologies such as Flutter.
