Education & Background
- Bachelor’s or Diploma in Safety Engineering, Fire & Safety, Chemical Engineering, Environmental Science, or a related field preferred.
- A combination of HSE qualification and hands-on experience in the chemical/manufacturing industry is strongly preferred.
- Knowledge of chemical processes, hazardous chemicals, chemical handling, storage, transfer, process safety, fire protection, and occupational health is essential.
- Candidates with a recognized Industrial Safety Diploma qualification will be preferred.
Experience
- 5+ years of experience in HSE, preferably with at least 2–3 years in a chemical, petrochemical, pharmaceutical, fluorochemical, manufacturing, or other high-risk industrial environment.
- Practical experience in chemical plant safety, process safety, fire prevention, occupational health, permit-to-work systems, and emergency response.
- Hands-on experience in identifying and controlling hazards related to flammable, toxic, corrosive, reactive,
and hazardous chemicals.
- Experience in conducting HSE inspections, safety audits, toolbox talks, JSA/JHA, risk assessments, incident investigations, emergency drills, and corrective-action follow-up.
- Working knowledge of ISO 45001, safety standardization requirements, statutory compliance, and industrial safety procedures.
Core Competencies
- Chemical & Process Safety: Understands chemical hazards, SDS/MSDS, chemical compatibility, safe chemical storage, handling, transfer, pipelines, reactors, tanks, pressure vessels, LPG systems, and hazardous-area safety.
- Risk Assessment & Control: Conducts JSA/JHA, risk assessments, HIRA, and participates in HAZOP/LOPA studies; identifies unsafe conditions and ensures implementation of appropriate control measures.
- Permit-to-Work System: Practical knowledge of Hot Work, Cold Work, Height Work, Confined Space Entry, Excavation, Electrical Work, Line Breaking, and other high-risk work permits.
- Fire & Emergency Management: Conducts fire, chemical leakage, toxic-gas release, explosion, spill, rescue, and evacuation drills; ensures emergency equipment and response arrangements are ready.
- Safety Inspection: Performs daily plant inspections covering production areas, chemical storage, utilities, electrical systems, machinery, PPE, fire protection systems, housekeeping, access/egress, and emergency arrangements.
- Incident Management: Reports and investigates near misses, unsafe acts/conditions, first-aid cases, accidents, and incidents; supports Root Cause Analysis and implementation of corrective and preventive actions.
- Occupational Health: Monitors chemical exposure risks, PPE compliance, workplace hygiene, medical examination requirements, occupational-health records, and employee exposure to hazardous substances.
- Regulatory Compliance: Supports compliance with applicable Factories Act/Rules, Workplace/Fire requirements, hazardous-chemical regulations, occupational-health requirements, and other applicable India statutory requirements.
- Safety Culture:
Promotes safe working practices among employees, contract workers, operators, technicians, and visitors and ensures compliance with plant HSE procedures.
Skills & Certifications
- Good knowledge of chemical plant hazards, including toxic gas exposure, flammable chemicals, corrosive chemicals, chemical reactions, pressure systems, temperature hazards, and process deviations.
- Practical knowledge of HIRA, JSA/JHA, HAZOP, LOPA, Bow-Tie analysis, MOC, incident investigation, RCA, and emergency preparedness.
- Knowledge of PPE selection and inspection, respiratory protection, chemical-resistant PPE, SCBA, safety showers, eyewash stations, gas detectors, fire extinguishers, hydrants, fire alarms, and emergency equipment.
- Ability to maintain and analyze HSE records using MS Excel, including incident statistics, near-miss reports, inspection findings, training records, hazard-closure status, and corrective-action tracking.
- Ability to conduct toolbox talks, safety inductions, emergency-response training, mock drills, and contractor safety training.
- Familiarity with ISO 45001 documentation, SOPs, work instructions, checklists, safety reports, audit findings, and CAPA tracking.
- Good communication skills with the ability to coordinate effectively with Production, Maintenance, Electrical & Instrumentation, Utilities, Quality, HR, Security, contractors, and management.
Nice to Have
- Industrial Safety Diploma, Fire & Safety certification, or other recognized HSE qualification.
- Experience in a fluorochemical, chemical, petrochemical, pharmaceutical, specialty chemical, or hazardous-process manufacturing plant.
- Experience handling toxic/flammable gases, hazardous chemicals, LPG, pressure vessels, reactors, chemical storage tanks, pipelines, and process equipment.
- Knowledge of Emergency Response & Disaster Management Plan (ERDMP), On-Site Emergency Plan, mock-drill management, and coordination with fire/emergency services.
- Experience in implementing ISO 45001 and safety-standardization systems and maintaining a strong safety culture.
- Knowledge of local industrial regulations and coordination with Factory Inspectorate, Fire Department, Pollution Control Board, Emergency Services, and other statutory authorities.
- Track record of reducing unsafe conditions, improving hazard-closure rates, near-miss reporting, safety compliance, and incident prevention.
