Key Roles & Responsibilities

1. Strategic & Departmental Leadership

- Own overall accountability for the fabrication department's performance output, quality, cost, safety, and delivery.
- Translate business/project goals into departmental plans, targets, and execution strategy.
- Represent the fabrication function in management review meetings and report on KPIs, risks, and improvement plans.
- Drive capacity planning and resource forecasting in line with the order book/project pipeline.
- Lead budgeting for the fabrication department and monitor cost against budget, driving corrective action on variances.
- Set departmental goals, review performance periodically, and drive accountability across teams.

2. Production & Project Management

- Plan, schedule, and monitor fabrication activities across projects to meet delivery commitments.
- Allocate manpower, equipment, and materials across jobs to optimize productivity and utilization.
- Review progress against project plans and proactively resolve bottlenecks, delays, or resource conflicts.
- Act as the key point of contact with clients/customers and third-party inspection agencies for fabrication-related matters, stage clearances, and escalations.
- Drive cross-functional coordination with Design, Planning, Procurement, Stores, and QA/QC to ensure seamless execution.

3. Technical Governance

- Ensure all fabrication work is executed in compliance with relevant standards, codes, rules, and client specifications.
- Review and approve Welding Procedure Specifications (WPS) and Procedure Qualification Records (PQR).
- Provide technical oversight of welding processes – SMAW, GMAW, and GTAW – and resolve complex process/technical issues.
- Knowledge of testing plans (destructive and non-destructive) and ensure timely closure of NDT/inspection reports.
- Knowledge of selection and heat-treatment requirements based on weldability and application.




- Knowledge of consumable selection in line with WPS and project requirements.
- Own root-cause analysis and closure of recurring weld defects and quality issues at a systemic level.

4. Quality, Safety & Compliance

- Ensure fabrication operations comply with the plant's Quality Management System (ISO 9001 / ISO 3834) and applicable regulatory requirements.
- Champion a robust safety culture on the shop floor; ensure adherence to welding/fabrication safety standards and hazard-control practices.
- Own closure of Non-Conformance Reports (NCRs), customer complaints, and audit findings related to fabrication.
- Lead the department through internal and external (client/third-party/statutory) audits and inspections.
- Ensure fabrication documentation (WPS/PQR, welder qualifications, inspection & test records, traceability) is complete, current, and audit-ready.

5. Team Leadership & People Development

- Build, lead, and develop a high-performing fabrication team, including supervisors, welding engineers/inspectors, welders, and fitters.
- Drive manpower planning, recruitment, and welder qualification/certification programs.
- Set individual and team performance goals; conduct appraisals and identify training/development needs.
- Mentor supervisors and senior welders to build technical and leadership bench strength.
- Foster a culture of discipline, accountability, ownership, and continuous improvement within the team.

6. Continuous Improvement

- Drive productivity improvement, cost reduction, and process optimization initiatives (Lean, 5S, Kaizen) within fabrication.




- Monitor and review key performance indicators – productivity, rejection/rework rate, safety incidents, on-time delivery, cost per unit.
- Evaluate and recommend investment in new welding technology/equipment to improve capability and efficiency.

Required Technical Skills & Knowledge

- Strong command of relevant standards, rules, and specifications governing fabrication work.
- Qualified Welding Engineer or CSWIP 3.1 certified.
- Sound working knowledge of the WPS/PQR system and its governance.
- Deep knowledge of welding processes – SMAW, GMAW, and GTAW.
- Strong understanding of welding testing methods – Destructive and Non-Destructive Testing (NDT).
- Working knowledge of metallurgy – material type, weldability, and heat treatment.
- Sound knowledge of welding consumables and selection criteria.
- Strong knowledge of safety practices in welding and fabrication.
- Deep understanding of weld defects, root-cause analysis, and prevention.
- Ability to read and interpret engineering/GA drawings and fabrication isometrics.
- Working knowledge of quality management systems (ISO 9001 / ISO 3834) and regulatory compliance.
- Understanding of production planning, budgeting, and cost control.
- Proficiency in MS Office/ERP systems for reporting and documentation.

Educational Qualification

- Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering
- CSWIP 3.1 Certification
