Deputy Finance Officer
Role Purpose
Karunya University is looking for an experienced finance professional with robust expertise in financial management, accounting, budgeting, financial reporting, statutory compliance and financial controls to support the University's Finance function as Deputy Finance Officer.
The role will work closely with University leadership in strengthening institutional financial planning, budgetary control, accounting discipline, financial reporting, audit readiness and effective utilisation of University resources.
The position will contribute to a Finance function that supports institutional governance, financial accountability and long-term financial sustainability.
Key Responsibilities
1. Budgeting, Financial Planning & Control
- Support the preparation of the University's annual budget and financial plans.
- Monitor budget allocation, utilisation and variance across institutional functions.
- Analyse actuals against budget and provide variance reports to the Finance Officer and management.
- Support financial planning and resource allocation for academic, administrative, research and institutional initiatives.
- Strengthen budgetary control and cost monitoring across the University.
- Contribute to financial sustainability through effective allocation and utilisation of institutional resources.
- Financial Accounting & Finalisation
- Oversee and review accounting transactions and ensure accuracy and completeness of financial records.
- Support timely monthly, quarterly and annual closing of accounts.
- Review and support preparation of Balance Sheet, Income & Expenditure Account, Receipts & Payments Account, and supporting financial schedules.
- Ensure proper reconciliation and review of financial accounts.
- Strengthen accounting processes, review mechanisms and internal controls.
- Institutional Receipts & Payments
- Monitor accounting and financial reporting relating to student fees, grants, contributions, interest income and other institutional receipts.
- Review payments relating to employees,
vendors, contractors, service providers and student refunds.
- Monitor appropriate accounting and control of institutional assets and financial investments.
- Support financial oversight of fixed assets, capitalisation, fixed deposits and loan-related transactions.
- MIS, Financial Analysis & Management Reporting
- Develop and review financial MIS for University leadership.
- Provide analysis of revenue, expenditure, budget utilisation, cash position and financial performance.
- Prepare financial information required by the Finance Officer, Vice Chancellor and institutional committees.
- Identify financial trends, risks and variances requiring management attention.
- Support data-driven financial decision-making.
- Statutory Compliance & Taxation
- Oversee compliance with applicable income tax, GST, TDS and other statutory financial requirements, as applicable to the University's operations.
- Ensure timely preparation and submission of statutory financial returns and supporting documentation.
- Coordinate with statutory authorities and professional advisors where required.
- Maintain appropriate documentation and financial records for regulatory requirements.
- Internal Controls, Risk & Governance
- Strengthen internal financial controls across University operations.
- Identify financial control gaps and recommend corrective measures.
- Establish appropriate review and approval mechanisms for financial transactions.
- Support risk identification and mitigation relating to financial operations.
- Ensure financial processes are aligned with University policies and approved procedures.
- Audit & Assurance
- Coordinate with statutory and internal auditors.
- Facilitate audit requirements and provide financial records, schedules and supporting documentation.
- Track audit observations and coordinate timely corrective action.
- Strengthen audit readiness and financial documentation.
- Support management in addressing financial and compliance observations.
- Institutional Financial Governance
- Support the Finance Officer in matters placed before the Finance Committee and University leadership.
- Prepare financial analysis, statements and supporting information required for institutional review.
- Work with the Registrar, academic leadership, administrative functions and other stakeholders on financial matters.
- Ensure financial decisions are supported by appropriate analysis and documentation.
- Finance Team & Process Leadership
- Guide and review the work of Finance & Accounts personnel.
- Strengthen accounting workflows, controls and review mechanisms.
- Improve financial processes through appropriate use of ERP, accounting systems and financial MIS.
- Build a culture of accuracy, accountability, compliance and timely reporting within the Finance function.

Qualification & Experience
- CA / ICWA
- Minimum 5 years of experience in reputed organisations
- Strong experience in financial management, accounting, budgeting, financial reporting, taxation, compliance, audit and internal controls.
