Data Scientist

Syntellect is building the intelligence layer for lending in markets where bureau data stops. RightProfile™ — our field AI platform is live across India and East Africa, and expanding into new geographies fast. We need a Senior Data Scientist who operates in two modes simultaneously: driving continuous innovation across our existing suite of AI capabilities, and going out into the field literally sitting with lenders, loan officers, and borrowers to surface the insights that become our next generation of products.

WHAT YOU WILL OWN

- Drive innovation across our existing AI modules — image intelligence, voice-to-structured-data, document pre-underwriting, and multi-signal triangulation — identifying accuracy gaps, introducing new model architectures, and pushing performance benchmarks
- Conduct on-ground customer immersions: accompany field officers, observe loan origination in real conditions, and convert unstructured field knowledge into hypotheses for new product capabilities
- Conceptualise and prototype new modules end-to-end — from customer pain-point to proof-of-concept to production — working directly with the CTO and Founder-CEO
- Refine and expand our surrogate income and creditworthiness classification logic across trade segments and geographies, calibrating models to loan officer ground truth rather than bureau proxies
- Act as the primary data science liaison with active clients — lead performance reviews, explain model behaviour to credit heads and CXOs, and translate field feedback into a transparent improvement roadmap
- Monitor live deployments across geographies; detect model drift early and ship fixes fast — this is an environment where days matter, not sprints
- Build evaluation frameworks — precision/recall, NPA lift, Gini, KS — and convert them into ROI narratives that resonate with credit risk and product leaders




- Contribute to research and outcome measurement deliverables for development finance and grant partners, with rigorous, audit-ready data outputs

MUST HAVE

- 3+ years in applied ML/data science with shipped, production models — not just research
- Deep expertise in at least one of: computer vision, NLP/ASR, or document intelligence
- Proven ability to present complex model outputs to non-technical audiences credit committees, CXOs, regulators
- Comfort going from ambiguous customer observation to structured problem to prototype in compressed timelines
- Strong Python and SQL; fluency with cloud-based data pipelines and experiment tracking
- High ownership instinct — you close loops, flag issues early, and do not wait to be chased

STRONG PLUS

- MSME, microfinance, or BFSI credit domain knowledge
- Experience with low-resource or multilingual models
- Familiarity with alternative credit scoring and surrogate income methodologies
- Prior experience in an early-stage startup — you built from scratch, not inherited
- Awareness of AI regulatory and data privacy norms in financial services

THE ENVIRONMENT Syntellect is a 12-person team. Decisions happen in hours. You will work directly with the Founder-CEO — who brings nearly three decades of lending experience and the CTO. There are no long approval chains, and no one to hand a problem off to.

This role involves both screen time and field time, sometimes in the same week. If you want a clearly scoped data science function inside a large org, this is the wrong role. If you want to build something genuinely new and have your fingerprints on what it becomes, this is it.
