Role Description

We are looking for a part-time Chess Tutor to work with two students, aged 10 and 11, through live online sessions. You will be teaching American students in English, so clear spoken explanation matters here as much as playing strength does. Strong players are common. Strong players who can explain a move to a 10-year-old are not.

This is a coaching role, not a lecture. Most of each session is the student playing, calculating out loud, or working through their own games with you asking the questions rather than giving the answers. We expect AI to be part of how you prepare and teach.

Chess is the one subject where the machine has been stronger than every human for decades, so what matters is how you use engine analysis to build a child's understanding rather than replace it. Sessions run Monday to Friday, timed around US student availability.

In this role you will:

- Teach chess fundamentals to two students aged 10 and 11 — tactics, calculation, opening principles, endgame technique, and board vision.
- Run live online sessions, one-on-one or paired depending on the topic.



Training games and post-game analysis work well with both students together.
- Review the students' own games with them and turn each loss into one specific thing to work on.
- Guide students through tactical puzzle sets, focusing on pattern recognition.
- Run sessions where students calculate variations out loud to build visualization.
- Teach opening principles rather than memorized lines. At this age, understanding why beats knowing what.
- Prepare students for scholastic tournaments and rated online play, if and when they are ready.
- Use engines and AI tools as part of your teaching workflow — preparing positions, generating drills at the right difficulty, and analyzing games — while keeping the thinking with the student.
- Share short, regular progress updates with parents.

Qualifications

- Experience coaching chess to children in the 9 to 12 age range.
- A robust playing record, or equivalent tournament experience.
- Excellent spoken English. You will be teaching American students directly and they need to follow you easily.
- Proven ability to explain why a move works without falling back on engine evaluations or memorized theory.
- A reliable high-speed internet connection and a quiet place to teach. Sessions cannot drop or cut out.
- Comfort with video calls, screen sharing, and an online board and analysis tool such as Lichess or Chess.com.
- Comfort using AI tools in your day-to-day teaching, or genuine willingness to learn. We build with AI and we expect our teaching to use it too.
- Patience with young learners, including the ability to keep a child steady after a bad loss.

Details

- Part-time, remote from India, working US hours.
- 4–6 hrs/week, Monday to Friday.
- ₹500 per hour.
