Role Overview

This role builds and maintains Python backend services, internal engineering tools, and the automation around build and test infrastructure. The work covers APIs and services on one side, and pipelines and automated testing on the other.

It suits an engineer who has spent most of their career writing production Python and is comfortable owning the tools and services they build. The role is hands-on throughout.

Responsibilities

Backend and API development

- Design and build REST APIs and backend services in Python using Flask, Django, or FastAPI.
- Develop business logic, service components, and integrations with internal and third-party systems.
- Design data models, write and optimise SQL, and work with large or complex datasets.
- Debug issues across application, integration, and data layers.

Engineering automation and tooling

- Identify manual, repeated engineering work and replace it with tooling.
- Build scripts, utilities, and automation frameworks that other engineers depend on.
- Connect separate engineering systems through APIs so data and state move without manual steps.

CI/CD and build infrastructure

- Build, own, and maintain pipelines in Jenkins or an equivalent tool.
- Automate build, test, validation, and deployment steps.




- Investigate pipeline and build failures and fix the underlying cause rather than re-running.

Testing and quality

- Write unit, integration, and API tests as part of normal development.
- Build and maintain automated regression suites and wire them into the pipeline.
- Review test results, identify recurring failures, and act on them.

Collaboration

- Work with QA, DevOps, architects, and domain engineers.
- Take part in design discussions and code reviews.
- Document tools and interfaces well enough that others can use and extend them.

Required Skills

- Robust production Python, including object-oriented design and general software engineering practice.
- REST API development with Flask, Django, or FastAPI.
- SQL and relational databases such as PostgreSQL, MySQL, or SQL Server.
- Jenkins and hands-on CI/CD pipeline ownership.
- Test automation with PyTest, unittest, or API-level frameworks.
- Linux and Git.
- Ability to debug independently in unfamiliar code.

Preferred Skills

- Storage or server/infrastructure software background.
- Cloud platforms such as AWS, Azure, or GCP.
- Docker and container-based workflows.
- Perl or shell scripting in legacy toolchains.
- Service-oriented or microservices architecture.
