Role & responsibilities
CAD Design & Detailing
- 3D Modelling: Create and maintain parametric CAD models and detailed manufacturing drawings for sheet metal enclosures, plastic housings, brackets, and structural assemblies using SolidWorks (or equivalent parametric CAD).
- DFM/DFA: Apply design-for-manufacturability and design-for-assembly principles across sheet metal fabrication (bending, laser cutting, welding) and plastics processes (injection moulding, vacuum forming, machined plastics).
- Tolerancing & GD&T;: Apply GD&T; and tolerance stack-up analysis to ensure fit, function, and repeatable manufacturing across vendors. Rapid Prototyping & Build
- Hands-On Prototyping: Guide rapid, iterative prototyping using 3D printing (FDM/SLA), CNC machining, and workshop-based methods, staying closely involved through the build process rather than handing off and waiting for results.
- Builder Mindset: Comfortable being hands-on with prototypes, fixtures, and bench tests when needed able to step into the workshop and engage directly with fabrication, not just review drawings from a desk.
- Iteration Speed: Compress design-build-test cycles by identifying the fastest path to a testable physical part at each stage of development. New Product Development
- Lifecycle Ownership: Participate in and drive mechanical design activities across the full product design lifecycle concept, embodiment design, detailed design, prototyping, verification, and design freeze for new defence hardware products.
- Cross-Functional Integration: Work closely with electronics, systems engineering, and domain teams to package sensors, PCBs, batteries, and connectors into ruggedized, field-ready enclosures.
- Vendor Coordination: Liaise with sheet metal, plastics, and prototyping vendors to validate manufacturability, cost, and lead time during development. Core Competencies
- CAD Proficiency: Solid working knowledge of SolidWorks (preferred)
or Autodesk Inventor/Fusion 360, including sheet metal and plastic part modelling modules.
- Materials & Processes: Practical understanding of sheet metal fabrication (bending, laser/water-jet cutting, welding) and plastics (injection moulding, 3D printing, machined plastics).
- Rapid Prototyping: Comfortable working with 3D printing, CNC machining, and basic workshop fabrication for quick-turn prototypes, whether hands-on or in close direction of the process.
- Builder/Maker Mindset: A demonstrated personal or professional track record of building things — side projects, prototypes, or products — and a comfort with being hands-on when the work calls for it, beyond formal job requirements.
- Product Design Lifecycle: Familiarity with stage-gated product development processes (concept, design, prototype, validate, release). • Ruggedization & IP Rating: Preference for experience designing enclosures to specific ingress protection ratings (IP54/IP65/IP67) and MIL-STD-810 rugged design practices for military-grade hardware.
Preferred candidate profile
Technical Qualifications
- Education: B.E./B.Tech in Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics, or a related field.
• Experience: 79 years in mechanical design, with demonstrated ownership of sheet metal and plastic part design taken through to production.
- Proven Track Record: Direct experience contributing to new product development programs, from early concept through to field or production-ready hardware.
Preferred Qualifications
- Thermal Analysis: Familiarity with thermal simulation and management techniques for electronic enclosures operating in extreme environments.
- Structural Analysis: Working knowledge of FEA-based structural analysis (e.g., Ansys, SolidWorks Simulation) for stress, shock, and drop-load validation of ruggedized structures.
- Vibration Analysis: Exposure to vibration analysis and testing (sine/random) for platforms subject to transport and operational shock/vibration loads.
