SDET III - BenTech Integrations
Job Summary A Software Development Engineer in Test (SDET III) in the BenTech Integrations team will contribute to high-quality software delivery for API-first and event-driven integration capabilities that connect The Standard's insurance ecosystem with external benefits technology platforms, HCM systems, and partner solutions. This role will focus on developing, maintaining, and executing automated test solutions for REST APIs, microservices, event-driven flows, data validation, and integration testing across the BenTech platform.
In this role, you will work closely with API engineers, data engineers, product owners, architects, DevOps/SRE teams, and other delivery partners to ensure that integration capabilities are reliable, secure, scalable, and production ready. You will build automated test coverage into CI/CD/CT pipelines, validate API contracts, test data flow across upstream and downstream systems, contribute to non-functional testing, and use logs, metrics, dashboards, and automated quality checks to investigate failures and strengthen release confidence.
The ideal candidate brings strong hands-on automation engineering experience, API testing expertise, disciplined test design, and the ability to independently deliver quality engineering work within a globally distributed Agile delivery model. This role requires investigative thinking, sound technical judgment, and an understanding of how automated testing, code-level quality practices, observability, and risk-based validation support reliability, operational readiness, and business confidence in a regulated insurance environment.
- Ability to work on-site in Bengaluru, India is a requirement of the role. *
Mode of Working: This role follows a hybrid work model, with a primary base in Bengaluru. While on-site presence is essential for key engagements, flexibility is offered for remote work based on business needs and team alignment. Skills And Background You’ll Need
Education: B.Tech / B.E. is required. A degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Software Engineering, or a related discipline is preferred.
Experience: Typically requires 6+ years of related experience in software testing, test automation, API testing, and quality engineering for enterprise applications.
Automation Engineering And Code-Level Quality
- Hands-on experience developing and maintaining automation frameworks for REST APIs, microservices, backend services, and integration workflows.
- Strong programming and automation engineering skills, including object-oriented design, test design patterns, reusable automation components, clean coding practices, maintainable test architecture,
and the ability to build automation libraries and troubleshoot code-level failures.
- Preferred: Experience with unit testing, white-box testing, or code-level validation practices, including the ability to read application code, understand control flow and failure paths, and collaborate with software engineers to improve testability, coverage, and defect prevention.
API, Integration, And Distributed Systems Testing
- Strong experience with API testing practices, including OpenAPI/Swagger validation, request/response schema validation, contract testing, authentication and authorization validation, error handling, negative testing, and backward compatibility testing.
- Experience with backend, API, and microservices testing, including service virtualization, mocking/stubbing dependent services, test data setup, and automated validation of distributed workflows.
- Experience validating integration flows across systems such as HCM platforms, benefits administration platforms, internal insurance systems, data platforms, or partner APIs is preferred.
- Experience testing API-first and event-driven integration solutions across benefits technology, HCM, data, or insurance-related platforms is strongly preferred.
CI/CD, Test Data, Performance, And Operational Readiness
- Experience integrating automated tests into CI/CD/CT pipelines, preferably using Azure DevOps, including pipeline-based test execution, analysis of build and test results, and contribution to automated quality reporting and release readiness.
- Experience with synthetic data creation, test data management, data masking, and data quality rule automation to support high-fidelity testing in regulated environments.
- Working knowledge of performance, load, and resiliency testing for APIs and integration services using tools such as JMeter, Gatling, SOAPUI, Postman, Curl, or similar tools.
- Ability to debug distributed test failures by analyzing logs, metrics, traces, API responses, pipeline outputs, and downstream system behavior.
- Familiarity with cloud-native engineering practices, Azure-based delivery models, containerized environments, and DevOps ways of working is preferred.
Quality Execution, Risk Judgment, And Team Contribution
- Applies risk-based testing judgment to identify quality risks, select appropriate test approaches and automation techniques, and prioritize validation around business-critical flows, integration failure points, data integrity, security, resiliency, and production support impact.
- Ability to partner with API engineers, data engineers, product owners, architects, and DevOps/SRE teams to define test coverage, automation needs, and release readiness evidence for assigned features and services.
- Contributes to automation patterns, quality practices, testability improvements, and team engineering standards; supports team learning through knowledge sharing, pairing, code reviews, and practical guidance.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills,
with the ability to clearly communicate test progress, risks, defects, dependencies, and quality insights to technical and non-technical delivery partners.
Preferred Domain Background
- Preferred: Experience testing software in regulated, mission-critical, or high-consequence domains such as insurance, healthcare, medical devices, financial services, or similar environments where quality, traceability, risk management, and release discipline are essential.
Key Behaviors Of a Successful Candidate
- Ownership and Accountability - Independently drives assigned automation and quality work, takes responsibility for commitments, manages ambiguity, and owns validation for assigned features from requirement understanding through production readiness.
- Customer and Business Focus - Understands how BenTech integrations support employer, broker, partner, and customer experiences; identifies quality risks that could affect business outcomes or operational reliability.
- Engineering Excellence - Builds maintainable and reusable test automation; applies disciplined testing and coding practices; and contributes to effective quality gates, observability, and defect prevention throughout the delivery lifecycle.
- Collaboration and Influence - Partners effectively with API engineers, data engineers, product owners, architects, DevOps/SRE teams, and other delivery partners to strengthen quality practices and achieve shared outcomes.
- Improvement Mindset - Identifies opportunities to improve automation coverage, pipeline reliability, defect prevention, test data management, team effectiveness, and release confidence across BenTech integration delivery
