Astr Defence is looking for a hands-on Mechanical Engineer – Product Development to join our growing engineering and manufacturing team.

This role is ideal for an engineer with 2–4 years of practical experience in precision product development, press-tool development, fixtures, gauges and manufacturing-oriented engineering.

We are looking for someone who enjoys taking a product from concept → development → tooling → trials → production, working closely with Design, Production, Quality and vendors.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Product Development – End to End

- Assist in the complete product development and NPD lifecycle
- Support development from initial engineering requirements through prototype, trials and production
- Identify practical manufacturing and development challenges and support their resolution
- Work closely with Design, Production, Quality and Vendor teams

Engineering Drawings

- Prepare and modify basic engineering/manufacturing drawings
- Understand dimensions, tolerances, fits and basic GD&T;
- Convert development requirements into explicit manufacturing documentation

Press Tool Development

- Support press-tool design and development
- Understand sheet-metal components, forming, bending, punching and related operations
- Coordinate tool fabrication, trials, corrections and validation
- Work with tool vendors to resolve development issues

Fixtures & Gauges

- Develop practical jigs, fixtures and inspection gauges
- Support fixture trials, modifications and production implementation
- Focus on repeatability, ease of manufacturing and inspection

Vendor Coordination

- Coordinate with external tool, machining and fabrication vendors
- Communicate drawings, specifications, technical requirements and development expectations
- Follow up on tool/component development, trials and corrections




- Monitor vendor progress and resolve technical issues in coordination with internal teams

Cross-Functional Engineering

- Work closely with R&D; / Design / Production / Quality / Procurement / Vendors
- Communicate technical requirements, challenges and development status
- Participate in prototype and production trials
- Support continuous improvement and process stabilization

Progress Reporting

- Maintain development status and action points
- Submit daily progress updates
- Prepare weekly product-development progress reports
- Highlight delays, technical challenges, pending decisions and required actions

WHO WE ARE LOOKING FOR

Experience:

2–4 years of relevant hands-on experience in:

✅ Precision product development

✅ Mechanical NPD / prototype development

✅ Press-tool development

✅ Jigs, fixtures & gauges

✅ Manufacturing-oriented engineering

✅ Vendor/tool-room coordination

Education:

Diploma / B.E. / B.Tech in Mechanical Engineering / Production Engineering or equivalent.

THE IDEAL CANDIDATE SHOULD HAVE

- Strong practical engineering and problem-solving ability
- Understanding of precision components and manufacturing processes
- Exposure to press tools and tooling development
- Ability to read and prepare basic engineering drawings
- Understanding of dimensions, tolerances, fits and GD&T;
- Practical knowledge of machining, fabrication and assembly processes
- Ability to work with tool rooms and external vendors
- Good communication and coordination skills
- Ability to work comfortably between design office and shop floor
- Strong ownership of assigned development activities




- Ability to prepare clear and timely progress reports

NOT A PURE DESK-DESIGN ROLE We are looking for an engineer who can go to the shop floor, understand the problem, discuss it with the tool maker/vendor, implement the correction and bring the component/tool to the required condition.

Practical development experience matters more than just software knowledge.
