A manual machinist operates non-automated machine tools—such as manual lathes, milling machines, shapers, and grinders—to fabricate, modify, or repair precision metal .
Core Manual Machinist
Responsibilities
- Interpret Blueprints: Read engineering drawings, sketches, and geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (GD&T;) symbols.
- Calculate Dimensions: Use shop mathematics, geometry, and trigonometry to determine cutting angles and material allowances.
- Machine Parts: Set up and operate manual lathes, mills, drill presses, and surface grinders.
- Measure Accurately: Inspect finished work using manual tools like micrometers, dial indicators, vernier calipers, and thread gauges.
- Select Tooling: Choose the correct cutting speeds, feed rates, and high-speed steel (HSS) or carbide tools for each material type.
