PURPOSE OF THE JOB The Systems Engineer - Safety is a technical leader, responsible for supporting the growth and profitability objectives of the company by aligning with customer functional safety needs and delivering solutions that require a detailed understanding of the complex intersections of all safety related engineering disciplines required on a product. This must be done in the most simple and elegant manner to ensure all stakeholder needs are met.
KEY INITIATIVES AND 90 DAY TOP 5
Each quarter the Systems Engineer - Safety will coordinate, with the Systems Engineering Manager the specific results, improvements, or accomplishments required to support departmental objectives. These will be expressed as Key Initiatives and 90 day Action Plans
ESSENTIAL JOB RESPONSIBILITIES
Work requires independent problem solving and decision making with general direction given on project objectives and broad guidance from corporate strategy and goals. Work is complex, difficult in character and requires strong technical and broad business knowledge in addition to program/project management skills. Functioning with full competency/mastery of work area, exercises considerable latitude in determining specific project objectives and approaches to assignment.
Decisions often involve substantial risk to the organization with potential for long-lasting results. Primarily involves senior/advanced level work and may supervise other staff, specifically lower level engineers on a project basis.
Plans, organizes, and drives all functional safety related activities on assigned projects. The systems engineer safety is ultimately responsible for the effective completion and management of the safety case per ISO-26262.
Responsible for conducting standard safety analysis and to provide guidance to the engineering design teams for systems, hardware and software.
Specify and document safety requirements for system architecture to include SW and HW. Effectively distills and communicates the customer needs into the product safety requirements. Create and maintain safety requirements documentation to ensure system safety definition is clear to all internal functional disciplines and the customer.
Communicating to engineering teams regarding all aspects of the functional safety lifecycle.
Supports quote pursuits by establishing,
capturing and communicating to the customer the functional safety requirements for the project.
Supports in developing and maintaining a safety culture.
Provides support and consultation to the operations team per part 7 of the ISO-26262 standard.
Support the integration of functional safety standards and industry common practices into corporate processes.
Perform competitive analyses and maintain knowledge of emerging technologies related to functional safety.
Participates as an integral member of the Engineering Team.
Participates in ongoing development, communication and implementation of team concepts, programs and policies. Coordinates work to ensure best practices with all team members. Attends appropriate team meetings.
As a member of the Engineering Team, fosters strong cohesiveness regarding all major issues; e.g., direction, annual plan, budget, policy changes, etc. Accepts responsibility to quickly identify any areas lacking cohesiveness, bringing them to the attention of the team leader and working with the team in a supportive manner to resolve issues effecting cohesiveness. Actively look for ways, and reinforce actions needed, to achieve synergy possible within the larger organization.
Performs other duties as necessary in support of business objectives. This position description is intended to guide the activities of the functional safety engineer. Educational Requirements
Experience Requirements
BSEE, BSCE or BSSE required
Preferred advanced degree (M.Sc.) in engineering field with coursework in MSEE, MSCE or BSSE
Preferred FSCAE certification from TUV Nord
(Functional safety certified automotive engineer)
Technical Experience:
Combined experience in the following disciplines:
- 2+ years of experience working with functional safety standards (ISO-26262)
- 2+ years of automotive embedded design experience
- 2+ years of experience in requirements definition, decomposition and the use of systems engineering methods.
- Hazard analysis
- Safety requirements capture(multiple levels)
- FMEA
- FTA(qualitative and quantitative)
- FMEDA (HW safety analysis)
- Safety analysis tool experience (i.e. Medini Analyze)
Industry Experience: Automotive embedded hardware and software experience with a focus on functional safety. Level III : 12+ years experience

Safety Engineering Skills: Working knowledge of the entire safety engineering lifecycle as defined in the ISO-26262 lifecycle.
Electronics Engineering Skills: Working knowledge of hardware & software, embedded control systems, control systems Theory & an ability to apply to practical problems.
Computer Skills: Skills in SysML or UML modeling of physical systems. Excellent skills in MS Excel and its Solver capabilities, and other software tools in general.
