IT Financial Analyst - Project Value Financial Performance Role Overview: The IT Financial Analyst - Project Value Financial Performance is responsible for strengthening financial management, forecasting, and value realization across the IT portfolio. This role combines IT financial analysis with practical IT project management experience. The successful candidate will work directly with IT Delivery Leads, IT Finance, Product/Technology Owners, and other stakeholders to ensure projects are financially well managed from initial estimation through delivery and benefits realization.
A key focus of the role will be moving beyond traditional project cost tracking to establish a consistent approach for measuringROI, financial value capture, and value realization from technology investments. The role will also supportIT GA budgeting and forecasting, with particular emphasis on labor planning and workforce costs.
Key Responsibilities
- IT Project Financial Management: Partner with IT Delivery Leads to provide financial oversight across active IT projects and initiatives.
- Establish and maintain project budgets, forecasts, actuals, commitments, and Estimate at Completion (EAC).
- Monitor project financial performance and identify variances, emerging cost pressures, and forecast risks.
- Provide clear visibility of: Approved budget Actual spend Committed spend Remaining forecast EAC Budget variance Labor and non-labor costs.
- Challenge forecasts and assumptions where project financials do not align with delivery progress.
- Work with Delivery Leads to identify corrective actions where projects are forecasting over or under budget.
- Support project financial close-out and ensure final project costs are accurately captured.
- ROI, Value Capture Financial Value Realization: Develop and maintain a consistent framework for measuring the financial value delivered by IT investments.
- Partner with business and IT stakeholders to establish expected value and benefits during project initiation.
- Support development of business cases and ROI assessments for proposed technology investments.
- Establish appropriate value measures for both large strategic initiatives and smaller IT enhancements where traditional ROI calculations may not be practical.
- Quantify value across areas such as: Cost reduction Cost avoidance Productivity and efficiency Revenue enablement Process automation Risk reduction Technology rationalization Application retirement and license savings Improved utilization of labor.
- Establish financial baselines against which realized benefits can be measured.
- Track expected versus realized financial value following implementation.
- Work with Delivery Leads and business stakeholders to validate whether anticipated benefits have been achieved.
- Develop reporting that demonstrates the financial return and measurable business value generated by IT.
- Forecasting EAC: Own or coordinate the financial forecasting process across assigned IT initiatives.
- Work with Delivery Leads to ensure EAC forecasts reflect current project plans,
resource requirements, vendor commitments, and delivery timelines.
- Analyze actual expenditure against forecast and identify material variances.
- Develop forward-looking forecasts rather than relying solely on historical spend.
- Identify financial risks early and escalate material concerns to IT leadership.
- Improve consistency and accuracy of forecasting across the IT portfolio.
- IT GA Budgeting Labor Planning: Support the annual IT GA budgeting and forecasting process.
- Develop and maintain labor budgets across IT functions and teams.
- Track actual labor expenditure against budget and forecast.
- Support workforce planning across: Employees Contractors Managed service resources Offshore/onshore resources Vacancies and planned hires.
- Analyze labor rates, headcount, vacancies, hiring assumptions, contractor costs, and workforce changes.
- Maintain accurate labor forecasts throughout the financial year.
- Support scenario modelling to understand the financial impact of organizational or workforce changes.
- Assist IT leadership with identifying opportunities to optimize GA expenditure.
- Portfolio Financial Reporting: Develop clear financial dashboards and reporting for IT leadership.
- Provide consolidated reporting across projects and portfolios covering: Budget Actuals Forecast EAC Variance ROI Value committed Value realized GA performance.
- Identify portfolio-level financial trends, risks, and opportunities.
- Translate detailed financial information into concise insights and recommendations for IT leadership.
- Support monthly and quarterly IT financial reviews.
- Partnership Governance: Act as the financial partner to IT Delivery Leads throughout the project lifecycle.
- Work closely with the IT Finance team to ensure alignment between project reporting, financial systems, forecasts, and corporate financial processes.
- Partner with business stakeholders to validate financial assumptions and realized benefits.
- Support IT investment governance by providing independent financial analysis of proposed initiatives.
- Improve financial discipline and accountability across IT delivery without creating unnecessary administrative overhead.
- Help establish common financial standards, templates, definitions, and processes across the IT portfolio.
Required Experience
- Demonstrated experience in IT financial analysis, technology finance, project finance, or portfolio financial management.
- Previous hands-on experience in IT project management, PMO, program management, or technology delivery.
- Strong understanding of the IT project lifecycle and how project scope, resources, timelines,
and delivery decisions affect financial performance.
- Experience managing project budgets, forecasts, actuals, variance analysis, and EAC.
- Experience developing or assessing business cases and ROI models.
- Experience with financial planning, budgeting, and forecasting.
- Understanding of employee, contractor, vendor, license, infrastructure, and other technology cost structures.
- Experience working directly with senior IT leaders, Delivery Leads, Finance teams, and business stakeholders.
- Advanced Excel and financial modelling capabilities.
- Experience with financial, ERP, project portfolio management, and reporting/BI platforms.
Preferred Experience
- Experience within a large, complex, global IT organization.
- Experience supporting an enterprise technology portfolio containing both major transformation programs and smaller enhancement initiatives.
- Experience developing benefits realization or value capture frameworks.
- Experience with GA budgeting and technology workforce planning.
- Experience analyzing internal labor, contractor, managed service, software, and cloud expenditure.
- Familiarity with Agile and traditional project delivery methodologies.
