Job Title

Head Product & Engineering

Department

Product & Engineering

Scope of Job Role

Looking for a highly experienced, hands-on Head of Engineering to take technical ownership of the development, industrialization and manufacture of a proprietary modular industrial process system.

This person will own the machine end to end from process architecture and engineering design through component selection, supplier development, fabrication, controls integration, testing, commissioning and ultimately repeatable production.

This is not a project-management-only role.

Need someone capable of looking at an industrial machine as a complete system, identifying weaknesses, making engineering decisions, resolving problems at supplier and workshop level, and taking responsibility for whether the final equipment works reliably in the field.

Own the engineering of the complete machine.

This includes

- Overall machine and system architecture
- Process and hydraulic design
- Mechanical engineering
- Piping and equipment layout
- Pumps, valves, vessels, heat exchangers and fluid-handling equipment
- Filtration / separation equipment and associated process modules
- Instrumentation and sensor selection
- Electrical panels and electrical integration
- PLC, automation and controls requirements
- Safety systems and interlocks
- Structural / skid / enclosure design
- Component specification and vendor selection
- Design for manufacture and assembly
- Factory testing and acceptance
- Installation and commissioning
- Reliability improvement and product standardisation The Head of Engineering does not need to personally design every discipline, but must be technically strong enough to challenge, integrate and sign off the complete engineering solution.

Job Responsibilities

System Engineering:

- Take ownership of the complete engineering architecture of the equipment.
- Convert operating requirements into a buildable engineering system.
- Develop and maintain PFDs, P&IDs;, equipment specifications, design calculations and engineering drawings.
- Define operating philosophy, process logic, control philosophy and system interfaces.
- Review existing designs and identify opportunities to improve reliability, simplicity, footprint, energy use, manufacturability and cost.
- Make technical trade-offs between performance, reliability, cost and complexity.

Machine Design & Industrialization:

- Take the product from engineered prototype to a repeatable manufactured machine.
- Establish modular machine architecture and standard configurations.
- Reduce unnecessary custom engineering between installations.
- Own design-for-manufacture and design-for-assembly.
- Define engineering tolerances, interfaces, specifications and quality standards.
- Maintain the engineering BOM and control design changes.
- Drive standardisation of parts and assemblies wherever technically appropriate.

Mechanical & Process Integration:

Provide technical leadership across

- fluid handling and hydraulic systems;
- pumps and pumping systems;
- valves and actuators;
- vessels and tanks;
- piping and pipework;
- filtration and separation systems;
- heat-transfer equipment;
- instrumentation;
- pressure systems;
- dosing and cleaning systems;
- structural frames and skids;
- electrical and control integration.

The successful candidate should be comfortable moving between individual component-level problems and overall system performance.

Automation & Controls:

- Define the required automation architecture together with controls and software engineers.
- Specify instrumentation, sensors, actuators, PLC I/O and control requirements.
- Develop operating sequences, alarms, interlocks and fail-safe logic.
- Ensure mechanical, process,

electrical and software systems operate as one integrated machine.
- Support development of remote monitoring, diagnostics and predictive-maintenance capabilities.

The role is not primarily a software-development position, but the Head of Engineering must understand industrial automation sufficiently to own the overall machine.

Suppliers & Procurement Engineering:

- Technically qualify suppliers, fabricators and specialist vendors.
- Review vendor drawings, quotations and technical submissions.
- Identify technically equivalent alternative components and suppliers.
- Work with procurement to reduce cost without compromising machine performance or reliability.
- Challenge supplier lead times, specifications and unnecessary engineering complexity.
- Develop strategic suppliers for repeat production.

Fabrication & Production:

- Work directly with fabrication and manufacturing partners.
- Resolve problems during machining, fabrication, piping, assembly and electrical integration.
- Establish manufacturing drawings, assembly instructions and engineering standards.
- Define inspection and quality-control requirements.
- Develop a repeatable production and testing process.
- Support localisation and alternate-sourcing programmes where appropriate.

Testing, Validation & Reliability:

- Define factory acceptance testing and performance-testing requirements.
- Personally lead engineering investigation where machines do not perform as intended.
- Root-cause failures across mechanical, process, instrumentation, electrical and control systems.
- Introduce corrective engineering changes.
- Build reliability and maintainability into future machine generations.
- Establish engineering data and evidence required before a design is released for production.

Installation & Commissioning:

- Define site engineering and installation requirements.
- Support installation and commissioning of initial machines.
- Troubleshoot field problems directly when required.
- Ensure lessons from commissioning are incorporated back into product engineering.
- Reduce installation and commissioning time as the product matures.

Engineering Team:

Over time, build and lead the engineering organisation required around the product, potentially including:

- Process Engineer
- Mechanical Design Engineer
- Electrical / Controls Engineer
- Automation / PLC Engineer
- Production Engineer
- Commissioning Engineer
- CAD / Design Engineer
- Technical Documentation / Configuration Control The Head of Engineering should determine which capabilities must sit internally and which can remain with specialist partners.
