– MBBS DUTY DOCTOR / RESIDENT MEDICAL OFFICER (RMO)

Department: Emergency / ICU / Wards

Qualification: MBBS with valid Medical Council registration

Position: Duty Doctor / Resident Medical Officer

Reports To: Consultant / Intensivist / Medical Superintendent

Job Summary The MBBS Duty Doctor is responsible for providing continuous medical care to patients admitted in the hospital, attending emergencies, monitoring patients in ICU and wards, implementing treatment plans advised by consultants, maintaining accurate medical records, and coordinating with nursing and other clinical teams to ensure safe and timely patient care.

Key Responsibilities1. Patient Assessment & Clinical Care

- Perform initial assessment of newly admitted patients.
- Take detailed history and perform appropriate clinical examination.
- Record provisional diagnosis and clinical findings.
- Monitor admitted patients regularly and document their clinical condition.
- Identify deterioration or warning signs and immediately inform the concerned consultant/intensivist.
- Implement treatment orders and consultant instructions promptly.
- Review investigation reports and communicate significant or critical findings to the consultant.

1. Emergency Duties

- Attend emergency patients promptly and perform ABCDE assessment.
- Initiate appropriate stabilization measures according to hospital protocols.
- Participate in Code Blue and resuscitation.
- Be competent in BLS and preferably ACLS.
- Manage common emergencies under appropriate consultant supervision.
- Arrange urgent investigations and specialist consultation when required.

1. ICU Responsibilities

- Perform regular ICU patient assessment and monitoring.
- Review vitals, fluid balance, urine output, laboratory results, ABG and other investigations.
- Recognize clinical deterioration and escalate immediately to the intensivist/consultant.
- Assist with airway management, intubation, central/arterial access and other procedures according to competency and authorization.




- Participate in ICU rounds and ensure consultant orders are implemented.

1. Ward Responsibilities

- Conduct scheduled ward rounds and review admitted patients.
- Attend patient complaints and nursing calls without unnecessary delay.
- Review abnormal vital signs and investigation results.
- Ensure medications, investigations and treatment plans are carried out appropriately.
- Coordinate consultations and referrals between departments.

1. Documentation

- Maintain complete and legible medical records.
- Document initial assessment, progress notes, treatment orders and significant clinical events.
- Maintain appropriate emergency and Code Blue documentation.
- Assist in preparing discharge summaries and transfer/referral notes.
- Ensure documentation meets hospital and NABH requirements.
- Complete MLC documentation wherever applicable.

1. Consultant Coordination

- Update consultants regarding new admissions and significant changes in patient condition.
- Follow consultant instructions accurately.
- Escalate critical laboratory values and clinical deterioration immediately.
- Participate in consultant rounds and communicate the treatment plan to the nursing team.

1. Procedures & Clinical Skills

The Duty Doctor should be competent, according to training and hospital privileges, in:
- IV cannulation
- Blood sampling
- ABG sampling and basic interpretation
- ECG recording and basic interpretation
- Ryle's tube insertion
- Urinary catheterization
- Basic wound care and suturing
- BLS/CPR
- Oxygen therapy
- Basic airway management
- Assistance during emergency and ICU procedures

1. Patient Safety & Infection Control





- Follow hand-hygiene and infection-control protocols.
- Follow biomedical waste management guidelines.
- Ensure safe medication practices.
- Follow patient-identification and communication protocols.
- Report medication errors, adverse events, falls and other incidents according to hospital policy.

1. Communication

- Communicate professionally and respectfully with patients and attendants.
- Explain routine treatment plans within the scope of responsibility.
- Refer major treatment decisions, prognosis and complex counselling to the treating consultant.
- Maintain patient confidentiality at all times.
- Maintain effective communication with nursing, pharmacy, laboratory, radiology and other departments.

1. Handover & Shift Responsibilities

- Report for duty on time.
- Receive a complete clinical handover at the beginning of the shift.
- Provide structured handover to the incoming Duty Doctor.
- Specifically communicate critically ill patients, pending investigations, emergency issues and consultant instructions.
- Do not leave the duty area without appropriate handover or authorization.

Required Competencies
- Valid MBBS qualification and medical registration
- Positive clinical assessment skills
- Ability to recognize and respond to emergencies
- Basic ECG, ABG and laboratory interpretation
- BLS competency; ACLS certification preferred
- Good communication and documentation skills
- Ability to work in ICU, emergency and ward settings
- Ability to work effectively as part of a multidisciplinary team
- Willingness to work rotational/night shifts

Professional Expectations The Duty Doctor shall maintain professional conduct, patient confidentiality, punctuality and ethical medical practice at all times and shall work within their level of competency, hospital privileges and applicable medical regulations. Job Type: Full-time

Pay: ₹35,000.14 - ₹74,942.94 per month
