1. Job Purpose The Associate Professor of Physiology will provide effective academic and professional leadership in the Department of Physiology, with primary responsibility for undergraduate and, where applicable, postgraduate teaching, curriculum implementation, student mentoring, assessment, research and faculty development.
The incumbent will work closely with the Professor / Head of Department to strengthen academic standards, promote competency-based medical education, support research and innovation, and contribute to the overall development of the Department and IQ City Medical College.
2. Key Responsibilities
A. Teaching & Academic Responsibilities
- Plan, coordinate and deliver high-quality teaching in Physiology for undergraduate medical students and postgraduate students, where applicable.
- Conduct lectures, tutorials, seminars, small-group teaching, demonstrations and practical classes.
- Ensure teaching is aligned with the National Medical Commission (NMC) competency-based medical education framework and the academic calendar of the institution.
- Teach and supervise practical components of Physiology, including experimental, clinical and applied physiology.
- Facilitate integrated and interdisciplinary teaching with other pre-clinical, para-clinical and clinical departments.
- Promote case-based, problem-based, competency-based and student-centred learning approaches.
- Develop and review lesson plans, teaching schedules, presentations, practical manuals and other academic resources.
- Participate actively in curriculum planning and implementation.
- Identify opportunities for improving teaching methodologies and student learning outcomes.
- Ensure timely completion of assigned academic responsibilities.
B. Assessment & Examination Responsibilities
- Participate in the preparation and conduct of formative and summative assessments.
- Set and review question papers, MCQs, SAQs, practical exercises, OSPE/OSPE-style stations and viva questions as assigned.
- Conduct internal assessments, practical examinations and viva voce examinations.
- Participate in university examinations and other examination-related responsibilities as per institutional and university requirements.
- Contribute to standardisation and quality improvement of assessment methods.
- Review student performance and identify areas requiring academic intervention.
- Maintain appropriate records of assessments, student performance and academic activities.
C. Student Mentoring & Academic Guidance
- Mentor undergraduate medical students and provide guidance regarding academic and professional development.
- Support students experiencing academic difficulties through appropriate counselling and remedial teaching.
- Encourage development of professional attitude, communication skills, ethical conduct and lifelong learning.
- Guide students in research projects, academic presentations, seminars and other scholarly activities where applicable.
- Promote a supportive, respectful and inclusive learning environment.
D. Laboratory & Practical Teaching Responsibilities
- Supervise and coordinate Physiology practical teaching and demonstrations.
- Ensure appropriate utilisation of Physiology laboratory facilities, equipment and teaching resources.
- Monitor laboratory standards, safety procedures and appropriate handling of equipment.
- Assist in procurement planning, maintenance and upgradation of laboratory equipment and academic resources.
- Review and update practical manuals, laboratory protocols and demonstration material.
- Promote incorporation of clinical correlation and modern teaching techniques into practical teaching.
- Ensure proper documentation of laboratory and practical activities.
E. Research & Scholarly Activities
- Develop and undertake independent and collaborative research in Physiology and related biomedical sciences.
- Initiate and participate in departmental and interdisciplinary research projects.
- Publish research findings in recognised peer-reviewed/indexed journals.
- Encourage and mentor junior faculty in research methodology, scientific writing and publication.
- Guide undergraduate and postgraduate research activities, where applicable.
- Participate in scientific conferences, seminars, workshops and academic meetings.
- Contribute to development of research collaborations with other departments and institutions.
- Participate in institutional research and academic-quality initiatives.
- Maintain an active academic profile through publications,
presentations and scholarly activities.
F. Institutional Responsibilities
- Participate in institutional committees and activities as assigned.
- Support NMC, university and other regulatory inspections, assessments and academic reviews.
- Ensure compliance with institutional policies, academic regulations and applicable regulatory requirements.
- Participate in Medical Education Unit activities and faculty-development programmes.
- Contribute to institutional academic, research and quality-assurance initiatives.
- Undertake additional academic or administrative responsibilities assigned by the competent authority.
Educational Qualification For Medical Faculty
- MBBS from a recognised medical institution/university.
- MD/DNB in Physiology or an NMC-recognised equivalent qualification in the concerned specialty, as applicable.
- Valid medical registration as required under applicable regulations.
For Non-Medical Faculty
- M.Sc. in Medical Physiology with Ph.D. in Medical Physiology, subject to the eligibility requirements and conditions prescribed by the prevailing NMC regulations.
Experience & Regulatory Eligibility The candidate must fulfil the academic qualification, teaching experience, research publication and other eligibility requirements prescribed by the National Medical Commission for appointment as Associate Professor in the concerned subject. The appointment shall be subject to the prevailing Medical Institutions (Qualifications of Faculty) Regulations, 2025, subsequent amendments/clarifications issued by NMC, and applicable university and institutional requirements.
Particular emphasis should be given to:
- Relevant teaching experience in a recognised medical institution.
- Demonstrated experience in undergraduate medical education.
- Research publications meeting the applicable NMC requirements.
- Completion of prescribed research/medical-education training programmes, wherever applicable.
- Appropriate qualified registration and documentation.
