Job Description
Sr. Structural Design Engineer – Design Team
/n
Location: Chennai | Experience: 5–10 Years | Type: Full-Time, Onsite
/n
Role Overview
/n
We are looking for a Sr. Structural Design Engineer to lead the structural design and analysis of Pre-Engineered Building (PEB) systems within our design team. You will own the end-to-end design of steel and RCC elements — from initial concept and code compliance through to fabrication drawings, BOMs, and erection-ready documentation — ensuring every structure is buildable, cost-efficient, and manufacturable with minimum in office skill dependency.
/n
Role in the Team
/n
- Report to the Lead Engineer – Design and collaborate closely with the BIM Lead, estimation, procurement, and site erection teams.
/n
- Serve as the primary structural authority on assigned PEB projects — owning design calculations, code compliance, and drawing approvals.
/n
- Guide and review the work of junior design engineers and detailers, maintaining quality and consistency across deliverables.
/n
- Represent structural engineering in project coordination meetings, design reviews, and third-party/IITM validation submissions.
/n
- Collaborate with the BIM Lead to ensure structural models, shop drawings, and BOMs are accurate and fabrication-ready.
/n
- Champion DFMA principles within the team — designing for minimum-skill manufacturing and on-site erection at scale.
/n
Key Responsibilities
/n
Structural Design & Analysis
/n
- Design and analyse PEB steel structures, LGSF systems, and RCC elements in compliance with IS 800, IS 875, IS 456, and IS 1893.
/n
- Apply DFMA principles to optimise designs for efficient factory fabrication, module assembly, and on-site erection.
/n
- Prepare and review structural calculations, connection designs,
anchor bolt layouts, and foundation interface details.
/n
- Coordinate with architects and MEP engineers to integrate structural solutions with overall building design.
/n
Documentation & BOM
/n
- Develop detailed structural BOMs specifying all steel and RCC components with quantities aligned to procurement needs.
/n
- Produce clear fabrication drawings with dimensions, tolerances, weld specifications, bolt-hole locations, and surface treatment requirements.
/n
- Collaborate with the BIM team to extract model-based BOQs and ensure zero mismatch between design, procurement, and site quantities.
/n
- Support the estimation team with approximate superstructure and substructure quantities at the tendering stage.
/n
Quality, Approvals & Site Coordination
/n
- Prepare and submit structural design documents for vetting by IITM or other designated approval bodies; address review comments promptly.
/n
- Specify steel grades and certifications; review mill certificates to ensure materials meet IS standards.
/n
- Collaborate with the BIM Lead on detailed erection drawings covering erection sequence, bolt tightening, and lifting procedures.
/n
- Conduct site inspections during erection to verify compliance with drawings; maintain QC documentation for inspections and non-conformances.
/n
Process & Continuous Improvement
/n
- Contribute to and maintain design SOPs,
standard calculation templates, and drawing checklists for the PEB design team.
/n
- Identify and implement value engineering opportunities to improve project margins without compromising structural integrity.
/n
- Stay current with advances in PEB technology, modular construction methods, and updates to relevant IS codes.
/n
Required Qualifications
/n
Education
/n
- B.E. / B. Tech in Civil or Structural Engineering (mandatory). M.E. / M. Tech in Structural Engineering is strongly preferred.
/n
- Familiarity with ISO 19650 and COBie standards is an advantage.
/n
Technical Skills
/n
- Proficiency in STAAD. Pro, SAP2000, or ETABS for structural analysis and design.
/n
- Strong knowledge of PEB systems: primary rigid frames, secondary members, bracing, purlins, girts, eave struts, and connection detailing.
/n
- Working knowledge of BIM tools — Revit or Tekla Structures — for model review and structural coordination.
/n
- Understanding of DFMA and PFMEA principles for prefabricated and modular construction.
/n
- Proficiency in AutoCAD for 2D drawing production and shop drawing review.
/n
- Familiarity with welding standards (AWS/IS 7215) and fabrication QC procedures.
/n
Experience & Mindset
/n
- 5–10 years of experience in structural/PEB design, with at least 2 years on PEB or prefab/modular construction projects.
/n
- Proven track record delivering structural designs from concept through fabrication and erection on steel structure projects.
/n
- High attention to detail, strong documentation discipline, and a collaborative, ownership-driven mindset.
/n
- Comfortable working in a fast-paced environment with overlapping project demands and cross-functional teams.
